A voice for peace, social justice, and the common good, The Progressive stands against militarism and the concentration of power in corporate hands, and champions the empowerment of the citizenry, peace, social and economic justice, civil liberties, human rights, a preserved environment, and a reinvigorated democracy. Its bedrock values are nonviolence and freedom of speech. The Progressive presents voices of dissent and voices that are under-represented in the mainstream with a goal of championing grassroots progressive politics. Featured columnists currently include Jim Hightower, Dave Zirin, Will Durst, and Kate Clinton. The Public School Shakedown: A fundamental struggle for democracy is going on around the country, as a handful of wealthy individuals and foundations pour money into efforts to privatize the public schools. The Public School Shakedown pulls back the curtain and reveals what is at stake. We follow the money, expose the privatizers, and report on the resistance and the hard work of people on the front lines of public education. The Progressive Media Project: We founded the Progressive Media Project in 1993 to diversify and democratize our nation’s op-ed pages. We train activists and staff from nonprofit social justice organizations to write op-eds, and we edit and distribute op-eds to newspapers around the country, with an emphasis on lifting up voices that are underrepresented in the mainstream media.
