Mission Statement

Partnering with people of all abilities to advance their total health

About This Cause

Founded in 1938 as Jewish Vocational Service, our initial focus assisted immigrant families fleeing oppression in Europe to settle in Milwaukee and find jobs. From these roots, the agency pioneered many innovative approaches for people of all ages, abilities & other challenges to achieve independence. In 1990, we became the Milwaukee Center for Independence. Today, MCFI provides person-centered care for children & adults living with a disability, complex medical condition, serious mental illness or other barrier across 30-plus programs. These programs fall under the core service lines of Behavioral Health, Brain Health, Children’s programs, Commercial & Employment Services & Supportive Living. MCFI’s client population spans all socio-psycho-economic backgrounds, but many live in some of the most impoverished areas of Milwaukee with limited access to resources. We work to advance health equity in the community, where everyone has the opportunity to succeed without limits. One of our goals for 2021 is to train all staff in trauma informed care. MCFI has long recognized trauma’s significant role in a person’s life. Trauma can be a one-time, multiple or long-lasting series of events that is emotionally disturbing or life-threatening. And it has lasting adverse effects on all aspects of a person’s total health — mental, physical, social, emotional, financial and spiritual. We believe this will help us become better service providers to the community.
