About This Cause

As a national organization started by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia in 1912, our mission remains that "Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place." Dedicated solely to girls in grades K-12 regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic level, Girl Scouts is the premiere leadership organization offering girls the tools they need to be successful leaders now and throughout their lives. From our willingness to tackle important societal issues, to our commitment to diversity and inclusiveness—Girl Scouts is dedicated to every girl, everywhere. At the core of the Girl Scout experience are activities that aim to promote members’ overall development—from field trips to cultural exchanges, from environmental stewardship programs to digital technology projects. In addition, members participate in the celebrated Girl Scout Cookie Program. Each year during cookie season, they sell about 200 million boxes of Samoas, Thin Mints, and other varieties, and total sales come to nearly $800 million. But the cookie program does more than raise revenue to support scouting activities. It also promotes leadership development by requiring girls to set their own sales goals and to create a business strategy to reach those goals. It is our goal that every girl has the opportunity to achieve three key leadership outcomes through Girl Scout programming: (1) Girls Discover themselves and the environment around them; (2) Girls Connect with others and build healthy relationships; and (3) Girls Take Action by identifying community needs and help make a difference locally & globally. Girl Scouting is where girls develop their individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.
