Mission Statement
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Madison is dedicated to meeting basic needs among Dane County households coping with poverty. At the same time, we provide meaningful opportunities for volunteers, members, and staff to serve their neighbors in need with love and compassion.
About This Cause
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is one of the longest-serving charitable and membership organizations in the world. The Society was founded in 1833 in France by six university students. Committed to offering person-to-person service to people who are poor, suffering or forgotten, the Society those young people founded rapidly spread across Europe, reached the United States by 1845 and was operating in Milwaukee by 1848. The Society began working in Madison in 1925. St. Vincent de Paul – Madison serves the community through one of Dane County’s largest food pantries, the only stand-alone free pharmacy in Wisconsin, a storage facility for the goods of persons who are homeless, post secured housing wraparound stabilization services, a sustainable 1.25 acre food pantry garden, seven thrift stores offering direct charity, and several other forms of assistance that help individuals and families move from surviving to thriving. Our services are offered without regard to race, ethnicity, religious belief, gender, or other characteristics unrelated to the basic needs of the people we serve. At the heart of the organization is the home visit program. More than 300 St. Vincent de Paul member volunteers establish one-on-one supportive relationships with individuals and families across Dane County who need basic items such as food, clothing, and furniture, and who benefit from the companionship, care, and compassion extended by these members. Home visitors assist individuals and families in navigating their particular challenges and needs and walking with them as a customized care plan is created. The goal is to help people move from surviving to thriving.
