Mission Statement
Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) nurtures, challenges, and inspires young minds through music, profoundly changing their lives and our community for the better.
About This Cause
MYSO’s programs foster critical thinking skills, creativity, and collaboration through more than 40 ensemble and enrichment options, ranging from symphony, string orchestras, jazz and steel pan bands, to music theory, composition, and international tours all providing high quality musical experiences to students at various skill levels. Students, ranging in age from 8 to 18, rehearse weekly throughout the season at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, giving concerts in a wide variety of venues throughout the region. Membership in MYSO is generally by audition; placement in the various groups is based on musical skill, experience and age. Regularly recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for its artistic excellence, MYSO is among the most successful and respected youth orchestra programs in the nation. With 1,000 young musicians ages 8-18 from more than 200 schools, 60 communities, and 14 counties throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois participating in MYSO's many ensemble training programs, it has become the largest after-school youth orchestra program in the United States. The organization also impacts an additional 5,000 children annually through its extensive Community Concert Series, and more than 22,000 audience members each year through the production of more than 80 formal concerts. Statistically-valid, outcomes-based research of MYSO students and alumni affirm the life-long impact of program involvement, attributing to continued social, emotional, cognitive, professional, and educational success within and beyond program participation.
