Mission Statement
Understanding Disabilities, Creating Opportunities and Promoting Community
About This Cause
We are more than our name! We support individuals with autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury, delays in speech, mobility, and development, etc. Since 1956 UCP of Greater Dane County, Inc. has been a recognized and trusted organization offering valuable services for families, children and adults with varying disabilities and delays. We are dedicated to understanding disabilities, creating opportunities and promoting a community where everyone belongs. Through our model programs, we strive to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and adults with a range of disabilities and the families who love them. Our Birth to 3 serves families with infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities. Through UCP, families can expect to be assigned a Primary Coach who supports their family in turning their daily routines into learning opportunities for their child through coaching, modeling, and information sharing. The family and Primary Coach are part of an extensive team of UCP professionals who are available to support all areas of development and concerns as needed. Examples of professionals who may make up a family’s team may include a early childhood special education teacher, speech-language pathologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, etc. Through UCP’s Respite Services, we encourage families to renew their energy and support their overall resiliency in caring for a family member in their home who has a disability. Respite enables families to receive support in connecting and establishing meaningful relationships with qualified care providers. Through these connections, we empower parents (or other family members) to take a break from their daily care responsibilities. Additionally, our services support children and adults with disabilities by helping them build interdependent relationships outside of their own family and increase opportunities for meaningful and active engagement within their community. Through our Youth Resources Services, we focus exclusively on inclusion. We help families of young children and school agers find and maintain licensed and inclusive childcare programming such as in-home care, childcare centers, or summer day camps. For teenagers we provide afterschool and summer programming but creating an atmosphere where mutual, natural friendships are fostered and valued, where disabilities are accepted, where individual differences and unique capabilities are celebrated, and where community resources are explored. An emphasis is placed on encouraging participants to self-direct when possible while developing the skills necessary to engage in our community successfully and safely. Our local UCP affiliate serves more than 1,700 families each year! We believe that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves a place in the community to work, to live, to learn and to grow. We believe that the community is enriched by diversity and the involvement of all its members. No matter which services a family or individual receives, we adhere the following core values: Collaborative Partnerships: We believe that it is our role to assist people in taking as much responsibility for their lives as possible while still recognizing that we all have a need to work with and be supported by others. Fostering independence as well as interdependence are both highly valued. Building on Informal and Natural Supports: We believe that it is our role to support and enhance the natural means which keep families healthy and allow for the inclusion of all in our community. Community Connections: We believe that UCP is a vital part of the community and that it is our role to weave our services into the fabric of community life. We believe that through enhanced relationships and community partnerships more opportunities will become available for members of our community to thrive. We consider community awareness and ongoing education to be vital components of our services. Quality Relationships: We recognize the importance and impact of family and quality relationships in every person’s life. We strive to nurture and support individuals with developmental disabilities in living a life that involves the important people surrounding and supporting them.
