About This Cause
Habitat offers low-income families the opportunity to become home owners through a non-profit mortgage program. Low-income families cannot qualify for conventional market loans, despite working multiple jobs in many cases. Families purchase their homes after partnering with Habitat and participating in financial counseling, 300 hours of sweat-equity in community service, and learning about home ownership and maintenance. Home construction is a unique collaboration with area high schools who start the construction in trades classes and is then completed on site by volunteers. Some funding for our program is raised by our Habitat store, which sells new and gently used construction and durable home products. By selling these products in our store, tons of materials are diverted from disposal in landfills. For example, in 2018 just measuring scrap metal alone, we diverted 15 tons from the land fill. We also secure store inventory by conducting salvage projects for vacant buildings to give usable materials a second life and offer products for sale at significantly reduced prices. The effect of stable housing on youth is critical to changing the root causes of poverty. A child raised in a home that is owned vs rented scores higher on math & reading testing, 25% more likely to graduate high school, 116% more likely to graduate college, and earn an income 100% higher than rental raised youth. With support from individuals and organizations who desire to make a positive impact today, and in the future, through our home ownership program, poverty housing can be reduced. The next generation of healthy families, graduates, work force, and community leadership depends on safe, stable, home ownership.
