Mission Statement
Fellow Mortals is more than a place; it is a living philosophy based on the belief that encouraging compassion in humans toward all life brings out the finest aspects of our humanity.
About This Cause
Fellow Mortals was organized in 1985 and incorporated in 1992, and has provided 34 years of continuous service to wild and human communities at no cost to the public. During that time, the organization has grown from a few rooms in a house to a professional wildlife hospital and associated purpose-built habitats and facilities. The hospital admits injured and orphaned wildlife as necessary 365 days a year, providing professional care for 2000 individuals annually. Even though many patients are newborns or critically-injured, 60-70 percent of those admitted for care are successfully rehabilitated and released or found a permanent placement. All care for injured adult wildlife, endangered or sensitive species, is provided by a small staff of licensed, professional wildlife rehabilitators, and takes place at Fellow Mortals' hospital or secondary pre-release location. During the busy season, the staff works alongside young professionals who have been awarded an internship that involves helping to provide care for orphaned small mammals and songbirds, and gives the interns hands-on experience in the process. In conjunction with providing direct services to wild creatures, we are committed to providing the public with information and education to help with ongoing human/wildlife conflicts, and to prevent conflicts before they occur and result in unnecessary death or injury. This education takes place at the hospital location, which sees thousands of people in our admissions area every year, as well as over the phone, through education materials produced and distributed to the community, and through formal programs given at schools and for other groups. In addition to providing rehabilitation and education services in our community, we are aware we can make a positive impact beyond our service area through our web site and social media. As professionals in our field, we collaborate with field scientists, other rehabilitators, and professionals from related fields in working to understand and address emerging threats to wild species as a result of human activities or environmental impacts.
