Mission Statement

To combat homelessness by offering life-saving, life-sustaining, and life-restoring programs

About This Cause

Repairers of the Breach is Milwaukee's only daytime homeless shelter open 6 days per week. We offer life-saving, life-sustaining, and life-restoring programs and service so that our Members (the homeless, housing insecure, or at-risk) can work towards permanent self-reliability. Our services are categorized as life-saving, life-sustaining, and life-restoring, however, many of our services overlap these categories. For instance, our Breach Café is both life-saving and life-sustaining. Our in-house cook proudly creates delicious and healthy meals daily, and we have recently partnered with the Hunger Task Force to ensure our food and our standards is of the highest. We serve a light breakfast, plenty of warm coffee, and lunch, and we also provide bag lunches for our working homeless. In 2023, our café averaged over 2,750 meals monthly. Visiting another life-saving and life-sustaining service, our free medical clinic, also helps mitigate diet-related issues, because we offer free medicines such as insulin for those with diabetes. We also check cardiovascular and pulmonary health, and offer medicines and treatments for those, as well. We offer several clinics throughout the year, from our visiting partnerships. One is our AIDS clinic that tests for the virus and offers treatment references. We also offer a breast health clinic and flu shot clinic. We served a total of 914 visits in 2023. According to thebalance.com, the average emergency room visit is $150-3000. At 553 visits, that is a potential savings of $137,100-$2,742,000 to the community, had these patients gone to the emergency room for care. Our personal care program is a life-sustaining service. We offer daily showers, and we provide toiletries and towels to the Members. We also have a free clothing bank we call the “Boston Store,” where Members can get clean, gently used, donated clothes. With an average of 489 showers taken per month in 2023, a 26.5% increase over 2022. We help ensure Milwaukee’s most vulnerable population are clean and clothed. Even by offering something as simple as garbage bins, we have kept countless tons of trash off the streets. Once our Members no longer need to worry about the basics like showers, clothes, healthcare, and food, they are free to focus on rebuilding their lives. Our life-restoring services aid them in that. One service, our Employment Assistance Center, helps Members write resumes and apply for jobs. It also helps them with interview prep and provides bus passes to interviews. We offer art-therapy, through our partnership with Mount Mary University, and we offer literacy services to assist in reading comprehension. We also offer an emergency warming room from December through March, a respite room, lifeline services (telephone assistance and mail service), storage lockers, and more. In 2023 we opened are emergency warming room an additional 18 days in April because of the weather, we had 4,904 visits. We kept 26-56 people per night out of the bitter cold weather during overnights, all while serving them during the day, six days a week. We are also able to connect our members to additional resources because of our strong relationships and partnerships with other organizations in the Milwaukee area, including: The Department of Veterans Affairs, the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative, Community Advocates, the Bread of Healing Medical Clinic, Elizabeth Ann Seton Dental Clinic, Dr. Comfort Footwear, the Milwaukee Police Department, St. Ben’s Medical Clinic, Outreach Community Health Services, Salvation Army Respite Care, several hundred faith-based communities, a number of secondary and high school groups, several universities and colleges including Cardinal Stritch, Concordia, Marquette, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and finally, a few local seminaries.
