Mission Statement

To be the leading source of safety education in Northeastern Wisconsin, dedicated to preventing and eliminating childhood injuries that lead to disability or death.

About This Cause

WE LOSE MORE CHILDREN every year to accidents than to birth defects or disease, and thousands more are crippled for life. Most accidents are caused by “careless” actions, and many of these could have been eliminated by investing time and money in accident prevention. But how do we instill an attitude of safety, and are we willing to invest ourselves and our resources in safety education? Medical costs due to injury: According to the most recent Brown County Burden of Injury Report, injury-related emergency hospitalizations cost society over $30 million. These costs only take into account the medical costs and do not factor in the work-loss costs due to injury as well as the total costs associated with injury-related deaths. Our programs generate over $6 million in total society benefits based on the calculation of medical costs, other resource costs, work loss, and quality of life costs. (Data provided by the Children's Safety Network.). For every $1 invested in Center for Childhood Safety, Inc. (CCS) and our programs the community can expect a $24 benefit to society. Our programs work, are cost effective, and save lives. Organization: Founded in 1991 by Dr. Gordon Haugan, CCS began as an agency committed to preventing traumatic injuries to children. Today, CCS is the only nonprofit agency in the region focused on the unintentional injuries of children. CCS is committed to education and prevention of all childhood injuries and partners with local agencies to help families thrive in a safe environment. Our mission is to be the leading source of safety education in Northeastern Wisconsin, dedicated to preventing and eliminating childhood injuries that lead to disability or death. During the past 25 years, only one organization has served as the clearinghouse for safety training in our community: CCS has been delivering on its core mission of being the leading source of safety education in Northeast Wisconsin. Our central geographic location within the counties we serve (Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Oconto, Marinette, Shawano and some work in Outagamie) makes it convenient for families. Regardless of socio-economic status, race ethnicity, gender, age, physical ability or language, we can meet the needs of all those seeking services in our region. Our estimated impact for 2018 is 20,000 children, parents, and caregivers. Request and purpose: CCS is requesting monetary funding to support our injury prevention programming. Reaching children, teens, and their families with tailored, convincing messages is an important part of the solution. Child injury is predictable and preventable. It is also among the most under-recognized health problem facing our country today. Many people don’t realize it, but the numbers show it. Every year, millions of children and teens are injured in and around the home, and tragically, thousands of these children die. It can happen to anyone and in a matter of seconds. But CCS is a solution. Our programming focuses on building lifelong safety education. We work with parents, caregivers, and the community on best safety practices for children and engage children themselves in the educational process through hands-on, interactive learning opportunities. Programming: Our programming focuses on building lifelong safety education and relies on funding from organizations and foundations. We work with parents and caregivers on best safety practices for children and engage children themselves in the educational process through hands-on, interactive learning opportunities. Education and outreach to parents and community members is important so they are educated on best practices in childhood safety and can pass that education on to children. Key programs include: • Safety Town: CCS’ annual summer safety weeklong day camp for children 4 to 9 years old, focusing on a wide array of safety topics (pedestrian, bike, poison, personal, pet, playground, fire, car seat, bus, etc.). • Child Passenger Safety: Certified technicians provide education and expert installation of car seats through free community events and one-on-one appointments. • Winners Wear Helmets/Wee Winners Wear Helmets: This initiative is the founding event for CCS, focusing on pedestrian and bicycle safety, brain injury prevention through helmet use and understanding the rules of the road. • Safe Sleep Program: Partnership with local agencies dedicated to providing one-on-one parent education, public awareness and free pack-n-plays to those in need to prevent infant injuries and deaths. • Safe Sitter: This program provides life skills, safety skills, and child care training to all youth in order to build safer communities. • CPR & First Aid: Obtain a certification in life-saving skills.
