About This Cause
North Central Conservancy Trust (NCCT) is a non-profit land trust serving eight counties in central Wisconsin. Our mission is to conserve the natural heritage of Central Wisconsin through the protection of land. Our main tool to complete our mission is the conservation easement. A conservation easement is a voluntary, legal agreement between a landowner and a land trust that permanently limits some uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. We help landowners develop easements that permanently protect the conservation values of the property. NCCT has protected lands that are open to the public and that are in private ownership. NCCT works with landowners who wish to permanently protect their qualifying land from development or undesirable use. Conservation easements are especially important for protecting the agricultural, scenic, and environmental qualities of our landscape. Said another way, farms remain working farms; forests remain forested through the use of conservation easements. The mission of NCCT includes educating the public and elected officials about the value of conservation benefits and the way in which easements can protect them. NCCT works closely with town and county officials, and is affiliated with Gathering Waters, a state-wide land trust organization that helps to coordinate land-protection activities among the more than 40 land trusts in Wisconsin. NCCT is also a member of the national Land Trust Alliance, which supports land protection across the United States. The beauty of protecting land through conservation easements is that everyone benefits. Landowners benefit from knowing that their land will forever be protected from development or abuse, regardless of future ownership. The public benefits from the preservation of open landscapes with protection of scenic and ecologically valuable natural areas. Conservation easements are the primary way in which our rural landscape and privately owned important natural areas are protected. NCCT is the only organization in the north central region of Wisconsin whose mission is to hold and protect conservation easements. We are dependent on donations to fund our work helping to maintain the beauty and quality of the central Wisconsin landscape to the benefit of all who live or visit here.
