Mission Statement

Adopt A Husky, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to finding new homes for stray, abused, abandoned, or otherwise homeless purebred Siberian Huskies. Evolving from a small group of caring individuals in September of 1998, our organization has expanded to include Illinois and Wisconsin, placing more than 2,500 Siberian Huskies in loving and permanent homes. We average over 50 dogs in foster care at any given time with a continual waiting list. Our organization has never refused to accept any dog based on the expense required to bring them back to health. Our foster homes provide the food, toys, treats, and most importantly, the love that these dogs so desperately need. We have no paid employees and exist entirely on private and corporate donations.

About This Cause

Adopt A Husky, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to finding new homes for stray, abused, abandoned, or otherwise homeless purebred Siberian Huskies. Evolving from a small group of caring individuals in September of 1998, our organization has expanded to include Illinois and Wisconsin, placing more than 2,500 Siberian Huskies in loving and permanent homes. Siberian Huskies are high energy, gregarious, independent, and intelligent animals. They were bred to run, and their ancestors have performed this function in harness on sleds for many generations. Unfortunately, many people purchase them from pet stores, puppy mills, or unscrupulous backyard breeders, places that are solely interested in the dollars they receive, and who do not provide prospective buyers with the proper breed information. As a result, many of the dogs end up in shelters as strays, or are given up to shelters by owners who just don’t want to be bothered. Occasionally we are asked to take a dog that has been removed from an abusive situation by the authorities. We are also contacted regarding dogs that have lost their owners because of an untimely death or a critical, life-threatening illness. This is where Adopt A Husky, Inc. enters the picture. Working with shelters and animal control facilities from Minnesota, Wisconsin and down into central Illinois, our organization takes these abandoned dogs, places them in foster homes where they are evaluated for temperament, nurtured, and provided with top medical care. Every dog that enters our rescue is spayed/neutered, receives all vaccinations, is microchipped for identification, tested negative for heartworm, and provided with heartworm preventative during the season. Our organization has never refused to accept any dog based on the expense required to bring them back to health. Our most costly medical expenses come from car crash victims (broken legs, jaws, pelvises, hips), pregnant mothers, heartworm positive cases, abuse cases (such as one dog set on fire), genetic/birth deformities (such as hydrocephalus, deformed limbs and epilepsy), infectious diseases such as blastomycosis, and puppy-mill shutdowns with severely malnourished, sickly dogs. We have received several dogs in need of emergency surgery due to huge cancerous tumors, gunshot wounds and abscessed teeth just to name a few. We average over 50 dogs in foster care at any given time with a continual waiting list. Our foster homes provide the food, toys, treats, and most importantly, the love that these dogs so desperately need. We have no paid employees and exist entirely on private and corporate donations. Due to the high cost of specialized veterinary care for these dogs, we have fundraisers at various times of the year in order to raise the necessary monies so we never have to turn any dog away because of their medical expenses. Our biggest fundraisers are sledding demonstrations in January and the “Husky Hike” which is held every May. We have a very extensive adoption process that everyone must undergo to ensure that our fosters find their ‘Forever Home’. Once an online application has been submitted it gets reviewed by an adoption committee member who then calls both personal and veterinary references. After this a home visit is scheduled where a one-on-one interview with ALL the household members is performed including people who may reside there part time. This is designed to help everyone understand the breed, its specific characteristics and to make sure a Siberian Husky is suited for this home. Once the Adoption Committee has approved the home visit report the entire family, along with any current dogs, will meet our foster dogs until the right match is found for the family. Volunteers are always needed for various jobs throughout the year like working events, transporting dogs, doing home visits, helping with fundraisers but especially being foster homes. Unfortunately the number of dogs that can be rescued at any given time is always dependent on the number of foster homes that are available. There is always a waiting list of dogs waiting to come into our rescue but sadly we are forced to turn some away because we don’t have the space.
