Mission Statement

Safe Harbor works to reduce trauma and promote healing for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect. We provide a trauma-informed, safe, child-friendly environment for best practice forensic interviews; immediate and ongoing advocacy for affected children and families; coordination and support of multi-disciplinary investigations and responses.

About This Cause

Safe Harbor is a Child Advocacy Center serving Dane and surrounding counties in South Central WI. Each year we serve 350-400 children ages 3-17, as well as intellectually disabled adults. Once an investigation into child abuse has begun, a child is brought to Safe Harbor for a forensic interview. Upon arrival, they are greeted by our child life specialist and a family advocate. The child life specialist will engage/play with the child in an attempt to put them at ease and answer any questions about what will occur. Once the child is brought back for their interview, the family advocate will meet with the family and provide support and any necessary information. The interview is being observed over closed-circuit video by a team of investigators, prosecutors, social workers and sometimes medical professionals. This allows for greater efficiency, communication & case planning during the investigation. Once the interview has concluded, the team will meet with the family and explain next steps. The family advocates will now provide any needed referrals to mental health services or trauma treatment, in addition to any emergency assistance funds. Finally, the family advocates keep in touch with the family until the case has been resolved.
