Mission Statement
The Racine Zoo's mission is to foster an enlightening and affordable wildlife experience that improves the bond between people and nature. The Society will provide for the recreation and education of the people, the conservation of wildlife and wild places, and the advancement of science. The zoo provides a sanctuary for positive interaction between people and the natural world through education, conservation initiatives and premium animal care. This AZA accredited zoo uses the combined knowledge of the AZA to provide the best care for our animals and use the most effective techniques to protect their species and educate our visitors. Currently, the Racine Zoo cares for approximately 77 different species of animals from Wisconsin and around the world and caters to more than 125,000 guests each year.
About This Cause
The Racine Zoo is the only accredited zoo in Racine County, and one of the most affordable zoos in the country. Our location near downtown Racine and our incredible collection of animals gives us a unique opportunity to reach and educate individuals and families about the environment. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Racine Zoo is held to the highest zoological standards in the world. Our Zoo is proud of its role as a leader in conservation and a participant in numerous conservation initiatives including the International Rhino Foundation, Giraffe Conservation Fund, Seafood Watch, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, the International Crane Foundation, FrogWatch USA, Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) and others. We successfully received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the gold standard for zoo operation, in 2017, and were named the Best Place for Kids by the Racine Journal times for the fourth year in a row. The Zoo has 77 different species and several hundred individual animals, including more than 20 that are part of national Species Survival Plans. Our Conservation Education Team plays a critical role in educating youth in Southeast Wisconsin about the importance of wildlife and caring for the environment by offering a variety of programming focused on the community’s youth, including our grant-based programming for low income students, like Wildlife Explorers. In 2017, our Conservation Education Team has already presented more than 300 live animal programs, classes, and events reaching over 30,000 individuals. Education is a core value of the Racine Zoological Society, and we are committed to providing innovative educational curriculum, with a focus on experiential learning.
