Mission Statement

The Kinnickinnic River Land Trust, based in River Falls, Wisconsin, works with the community to conserve and protect the beauty and health of the Kinnickinnic River and its watershed.

About This Cause

The “Kinni” – A Very Special River Known as the “Kinni” by those who enjoy it, the Kinnickinnic River is a spring fed, cold-water stream 22 miles in length surrounded by a picturesque watershed of 174 square miles. Due to its exceptional water quality and self-sustaining, bountiful trout fishery, the Kinni is classified as an Outstanding Resource Water and a Class I Trout Stream. The river is framed by a landscape with memorable views, ranging from gently rolling farmland in the upper watershed to a spectacular limestone bluff canyon on the lower river from River Falls to the confluence with the St. Croix River. The Kinni and its uplands are also home to a diverse set of unique and exceptional plant and wildlife habitats. Because of its remarkable natural and scenic qualities, area residents and visitors from all over the world form special, lifelong connections with the Kinni and its environs through fishing, kayaking, hiking, birding, hunting and photography. 20+ Years of Resource Conservation & Protection Community concerns about the future health of the Kinni grew during the 1970’ and 1980’s with the growth of the Twin Cities into western Wisconsin. In 1993, the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust (KRLT) was incorporated with a mission to work with the community to conserve and protect the beauty and health of the Kinnickinnic River and its watershed. Since its inception, the KRLT has worked with individual landowners and other conservation partners to permanently protect over 2,800 acres of land and more than nine miles of publicly accessible stream bank through the acquisition of property and conservation easements. The KRLT currently holds 34 conservation easements on private land and owns three preserves totaling 160 acres that are available to the community for conservation, restoration and education. We also host the annual Kinni River Clean Up and participate in other community events to take care of the Kinni and generate awareness about its special value. Important People Partnerships People and other partners are an important part of KRLT’s history and success. We enjoy the support of more than 300 individual, business & organizational members. Our programs and projects have also benefited greatly from a number of foundations and conservation agencies. We have an extensive list of both private and public conservation partners and growing involvement of KRLT volunteers. Continued Recognition for KRLT Performance & Accomplishment Our heritage of accomplishment has been recognized by others. We were the first land trust in Wisconsin to receive national accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in 2009. Our LTAC accreditation was renewed in 2020. Our statewide land trust organization, Gathering Waters Conservancy, named us the Wisconsin Land Trust of the Year in 2003 and 2009. We were also honored as the River Falls Nonprofit of the Year in 2010.
