Mission Statement
With nature as our catalyst, we energize youth to discover their spark so their futures glow brighter.
About This Cause
Camp Fire Minnesota is an inclusive nature-based youth development organization connecting Twin Cities youth with STEM education and outdoor experiences. We deliver our mission through three core programs: K-12 Environmental Education field trips and in-class programs, nature-based summer and school-break camps, and after school nature programs in the community. In 2022 we led nature experiences for 10,490 youth; 48% of youth participated in Camp Fire programming with financial assistance. Camp Fire was founded in 1910 by Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick and Charlotte Vetter Gulick who believed girls were every bit as deserving of outdoor learning experiences as boys. In 1912, the first Minnesota Camp Fire groups for girls were organized. In 1924, Camp Fire Girls in Minnesota began operating its summer camp program. In 1975, Camp Fire expanded to include boys. In 2022 we opened our first all-gender cabins to accompany our all-gender bathrooms. Camp Fire was founded on the value of inclusion, creating opportunities for girls to experience nature when that was not the norm. A century later, we’re just as determined to make the outdoors accessible for young people through financial assistance, outreach to partners who are traditionally underserved, and working to create outdoor experiences where young people feel a sense of belonging and safety. We created an Inclusion Plan that guides our work with five key areas of inclusion: financial access; racial diversity; gender and sexuality; ability, mental health and neurodiversity; and cultural appropriation.
