Mission Statement
The mission of Bloomington-Eden Prairie Meals On Wheels is to provide low-cost nutritious meals delivered to residents who are unable to shop or prepare meals for themselves. Our program serves all persons in need of our service regardless of their economic status, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, gender or life style preference.
About This Cause
Bloomington Meals On Wheels started serving meals in the city of Bloomington in 1969. It began with three local church women who saw a need for the delivery of hot meals to homebound parish members. They started out preparing six meals each day. The program has grown over the years and at its peak has served more than 150 meals a day. In 2006, we moved to our current location at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington. In 2015 Bloomington and Eden Prairie Meals On Wheels programs merged so that resources could be combined and the needs of both communities could continue to be served. Our volunteers deliver more than 100 meals each day, Monday through Friday with frozen meals available for the weekend. In 2017 we delivered 22,899 meals over 251 days. In addition to a hot, well-balance meal the volunteers are a touchpoint for the clients. A smile and brief visit can make all the difference for someone struggling with loneliness. Volunteers also alert staff if they observe any health or environmental changes that may cause concern. A daughter of a client sent this note last month: “Every person that has brought my Mom a meal has made her day. I come home to glowing reports on who she has met that day in addition to how good her meal was. Thank you to the Bloomington Eden Prairie Meals on Wheels team! Your efforts are truly appreciated!" The daily meals and visits allow our clients to remain independent in their homes longer. In the case of those who are elderly, they have the comforts of a familiar place, a healthier setting free of illnesses that may be present in a clinical environment, and much less personal expense than what they would incur if they moved to a nursing home or assisted living center. When a client can maintain their independence by remaining in their own home their quality of life is drastically improved and this can often extend a person’s life span. The nutritious meal and friendly visit help many of our elderly clients cope with three of the biggest threats of aging: hunger, isolation and loss of independence.According to the Minnesota State Demographic Center, Minnesota’s 65-plus population grew by nearly 100,000 between 2010 and 2014. In 2010 there were an estimated 683,000 seniors in the state. State projections call for that number to increase to 965,000 by 2020. By 2030 this group is expected to reach 1.2 million. More senior citizens than ever will be looking for services that will help them retain their independence and allow them to live longer in their own homes. Meals On Wheels needs to continue to grow with the population. Our goal each day, each week, each month is simple – to provide a nutritious low-cost meal to those in need. We want to deliver a hot meal to anyone who needs our service regardless of their ability to pay. Currently our clients pay for meals privately at the low cost of $5.00 per meal (our cost is $4.25 per meal) or through a third-party pay option. If a client cannot afford $5.00 per meal and they do not qualify for assistance in some other way, we discount the meals on a sliding scale to accommodate their budget.
