Mission Statement

Sojourner Project’s mission is to advocate for increased victim safety; support the transition from victim to survivor; and educate for the prevention and elimination of domestic violence. This work encompasses survivors of dating violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse. Our primary purpose is to increase victim safety through comprehensive safety planning, support, information, and assistance that promote opportunities for change.

About This Cause

In 1979, Sojourner’s founders, Jenny Arimond and Kitty Alcott, opened the doors to Sojourner Shelter. A tiny house in Hopkins, MN served as a refuge for victims of domestic violence. For over 45 years we have witnessed the transformative power of comprehensive support services for victims/survivors. Sojourner’s work is rooted in the belief that everyone has a right to be safe in their homes and communities regardless of background or circumstance. The availability of free, confidential, holistic, and survivor-centered advocacy is essential to a future free from abuse. Sojourner provides the following programs and services, free of charge: • Our 24/7 Crisis/Help Line provides immediate response to callers in need of safety assistance, information, and referral. Trained personnel are available to help callers assess safety needs, develop safety plans, and options. • Sojourner Shelter is an emergency housing facility for women and children. • The Community Legal Advocacy Program provides intervention services, legal advocacy, safety assessment and planning, personal support, therapy, referral information, and court accompaniment for victims in our service area. • The Community Outreach, Education, and Training Program develops curriculum and facilitates presentations and training in the community to raise awareness, promote prevention, and improve system response to domestic, dating, and sexual violence. This includes youth dating violence prevention education in schools and the community. We partner with 9 police departments and serve the following 17 communities in Western Hennepin County: Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Deephaven, Excelsior, Shorewood, Greenwood, Tonka Bay, Orono, Mound, Long Lake, Spring Park, Minnetonka Beach, St Bonifacious, and Minnetrista. For most of these communities, Sojourner is the only comprehensive resource available for domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse. Sojourner Shelter is available to women and children from anywhere in the State of MN. Contributions help ensure our services remain free and available to victims/survivors who need them. They also support our violence prevention education, professional training efforts, and systems coordination. Ultimately, the impact of our work extends beyond the victims we serve because domestic violence is not confined to the home. Because of advocate work with clients and our educational offerings, the entire community also experiences increased safety through reduced potential for escalating violence, better understanding of domestic violence dynamics and increased abuser accountability. Thank you!
