About This Cause
The purpose of Community Action Duluth is to combat poverty and the systems that perpetuate it on a local level. Our mission is to empower and engage our community to eliminate poverty. We envision a community where individuals and families can find the means to prosper with access to quality education, affordable housing and healthcare, gainful employment, and meaningful involvement in civic life. We believe that through community coordinated partnerships, people with low incomes can find the support, resources, and relationships that will help them overcome the economic, racial, or cultural barriers that have prevented them from establishing and maintaining self-sufficient and connected lives in our community. We partner with nonprofits, local business, and local government to work toward a community that provides these support systems for individuals with low incomes. Our current programs include: • Integrated Coaching: coaches provide guidance on a variety of issues, including financial literacy, education, employment, and homeownership. • Benefits Enrollment: specialists assist clients in signing up for SNAP benefits and health insurance through MNSure. • Transportation: staff work with participants to gain their driver's license, find an affordable car, pay for car repair, overcome fees incurred against their license, and also provide bikes and biking gear. • Farmer’s Markets: we host seasonal farmer's markets in low-income neighborhoods. Markets accept and match EBT purchases. • Mobile Market travels provides pop up markets with staple groceries for purchase, offers home deliveries for those in need, and accepts and matches EBT. • Deep Winter Greenhouse grows fresh produce throughout the year. It is sold at a low cost at markets. • Community Construction and Duluth Stream Corps: provide paid employment training to under- or unemployed individuals to provide a path to stable employment while improving our community. • Education: we offer a variety of classes and trainings, including Common Cents, Computer Skills, GED, Certified Nursing Assistant, and more. • Free Tax Site: provides tax preparation and filing for income-qualified individuals free-of-charge.
