Mission Statement
Since 1980, North Shore Horizons (NSH) a 501 c. 3 nonprofit, has been privileged to serve over 280 adults and children annually who have been tragically impacted by domestic and sexual violence. Our service area is primarily Lake County with a population of 10,866 (2010, U.S. census Bureau), spread over 2,062 square miles. Our office is located in Two Harbors, Minnesota. North Shore Horizons exists to assist survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, to provide secure and affordable housing, to work collaboratively to end violence and to advocate for respect for all individuals.
About This Cause
• 24 hours a day, seven days a week Crisis Counseling/Intervention includes a local hotline staffed by qualified volunteers and staff to provide immediate emergency assistance to survivors of violence which may include safety planning, housing, transportation, food and basic needs, provide information and referral, and offer emotional support. • Personal Advocacy empowers clients to move safely through the crisis of abuse with staff assisting clients to set their own culturally relevant goals which may include emotional support, information and referral to area resources for economic stability, and staff advocating on clients behalf at interviews and meetings. • Criminal Intervention/Legal Advocacy assists crime victims in knowing their legal rights, help in obtaining law enforcement intervention and filing Orders for Protection and Harassment Orders and Reparations Claims [90 individuals in 2014], help prepare clients for court and provide support during court proceedings. In addition the legal advocate tracks perpetrators through the court system, does monthly case reviews with Lake County Prosecutors office, and reports on cases to victims. • Victim Rights are provided to all participants regarding North Shore Horizons services and policies, crime victim rights, and information on Minnesota’s Crime Victim Justice Unit. Advocates participate in community team meetings to enhance crime victim rights and perpetrator accountability. Establish/improve policies and procedures with law enforcement, medical facilities, probation and prosecutors office through working agreements. Facilitating monthly meetings of the Lake County Coordinated Community Response Team to enhance domestic and sexual violence response through policy and protocol review, and trainings. • Financial Assistance for clients who have been impacted by crime and to become more financial independent. Staff assists clients whose goals are to apply for reparation claims, food assistance, medical assistance, housing programs, transportation help and job training. In addition North Shore Horizons has emergency on-site supplies of clothing, food cards, household items, and diapers. • Educational Support Groups in a safe environment for domestic and sexual violence victims in Silver Bay and Two Harbors Minnesota. Participant evaluations determine the focus of the groups. • Housing for low-income survivors fleeing domestic or sexual violence are eight units of transitional and long-term housing with rent based on 30% of income. Program includes on-site supportive services to assist clients in obtaining their self-defined goals. Safe homes and hotels are used for temporary emergency housing for up to 14 days. We were able to assist 42 adults and children, from 15 households, with emergency and permanent housing in 2014. • Prevention and Education includes a once per year 40 hour sexual assault training for crisis line volunteers. In addition, Safe and Strong child sexual abuse prevention programming for students, training for school personnel on sexual abuse, and professional and community education and trainings reaching 1,215 adults and students in 2014.
