Mission Statement
Minnesota Center for Book Arts is the largest and most comprehensive center of its kind. We celebrate the book as a vibrant contemporary art form that takes many shapes. Our mission is clear: to lead the advancement of the book as an evolving art form.
About This Cause
Over 80,000 youth, families, artists, and community members visit MCBA annually to participate in programs that preserve and celebrate the art of the book. With over 12,000 square feet of working studios, classrooms and gallery space, MCBA has become the largest and most comprehensive book arts center in the world. MCBA’s core programs are organized into two areas: Education Programs and Artistic Programs. EDUCATION PROGRAMS At Minnesota Center for Book Arts, the book comes alive. MCBA provides accessible and affordable book arts educational programming to children, youth, artists and lifelong learners in the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota. In 2015, over 24,000 Minnesota children and youth explored historical and contemporary papermaking, printing, and bookmaking techniques through free and low-cost programs with schools, libraries and community organizations. MCBA staff are skilled at creating custom workshops to meet the needs of each classroom and age group. A major strength of these workshops and residencies is the integration of the book arts into K-12 curricula to improve student achievement in language arts, social studies, science, and math. To extend impact, MCBA’s unique workshops for K-12 educators provide book arts knowledge, tools, and techniques for lasting integration in the classroom. Family classes provide opportunities for adults and children ages 2 and up to make art together, while open houses at MCBA’s historic facility provide fun, free art activities for participants of all ages. ARTISTIC PROGRAMS MCBA’s artistic programs offer numerous avenues for all-ages involvement. MCBA presented 14 free gallery exhibitions that showcase the interdisciplinary book arts, along with free all-ages programs. MCBA’s Winter Book, created annually onsite in our studios, highlights Minnesota’s talented literary and arts communities. Free artist roundtable discussions explore the arts, and the MCBA Prize and Biennial symposium draw international attention. Emerging artists participate through a Certificate program, the Artist Cooperative, and Open Studio program. Minnesota artists teach, exhibit, sell work in the Shop, and benefit from fellowships, mentorships, and residencies.
