About This Cause
AMOS & CELIA HEILICHER MINNEAPOLIS JEWISH DAY SCHOOL Who We Are Founded in 1984, the Amos and Celia Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School (HMJDS) is a K-8 program which, in 2014-15, enrolls approximately 250 students from the Twin Cities area. The school is located on the Barry Family Campus in St. Louis Park which also houses the Sabes Jewish Community Center and Talmud Torah of Minneapolis (a supplemental school program). Our state-of-the-art school building opened in 2001 and provides high quality classroom and office space. We also benefit from the Sabes JCC’s onsite art, theater, and gymnasium facilities. HMJDS is an egalitarian program that respects the diversity of Jewish life and practice. The school’s emphasis is on creative thinking, problem solving, and the development of leadership responsibility. Twin Cities Jewish Community The Twin Cities of Minnesota has a strong and stable Jewish community of approximately 19,000 households. The cities have among the highest synagogue affiliation rates in the country, as well as among the highest levels of participation in both formal and informal Jewish education. The Twin Cities has five Conservative and four Reform synagogues, and a number of modern and traditional Orthodox congregations. In addition to HMJDS, the Twin Cities has a traditional Orthodox K-8 school, a traditional Orthodox girls’ high school and boys’ Yeshiva. There is also a small, K-5 community day school located in St. Paul, as well as numerous supplemental and afternoon school Jewish education programs. We have vibrant federations in both Minneapolis and St. Paul, two active Jewish community centers, and a variety of Jewish social service and residential care facilities, agencies, and programs. Mission and Vision HMJDS inspires and educates students to reach their fullest intellectual and spiritual potential. Through rigorous academic study in all areas, including Judaic and Hebrew language studies, complemented by a diverse array of arts and wellness offerings, HMJDS provides its students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be successful community and professional leaders and life-long learners. HMJDS seeks to cultivate in its students a love of Judaism, Jewish heritage and learning, and the State of Israel, and it reflects and teaches respect for the diversity of Jewish life. HMJDS also educates students to engage as global citizens, using Jewish values to inform their personal choices, ethical frameworks, and social conscience. HMJDS is committed to providing a Jewish day school education to all Jewish children who desire it and strives to accommodate children with diverse learning profiles. Cornerstones of Education at HMJDS The foundation of an HMJDS experience is built by interlacing three concepts: • Judaism • Academics • Community HMJDS provides students with: • A holistic Jewish education and spiritual experience. • A superior and individualized academic program, grounded in knowledge, research, critical thinking, communication, and creativity/arts. • A warm community, accessible to a wide spectrum of families, and commitment to helping students become aware and engaged members of the broader global community. Electives and Technology In addition to rigorous general and Judaic education, we also have high quality music, art, and theater programs, as well as extensive athletic and academic co-curricular offerings. Our students also benefit from our wealth of technological resources, including both a MAC lab and a PC lab, a 1:1 iPad program beginning in 6th grade, SmartBoards, and other resources. Resource and Guidance Programs HMJDS believes that identifying and addressing the specific learning and social/emotional needs of each student is important in the fulfillment of the school’s mission. Each student comes to us with a variety of talents, abilities, and needs. HMJDS benefits from robust resource and guidance programs, which serve students with a wide range of learning styles and provide support for students with emotional and behavioral challenges. Accreditation HMJDS is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, and proud to be affiliated with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), the Center For Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE), and The Jewish Community Day School Network (RAVSAK). Outcomes HMJDS alumni surveys indicate that HMJDS graduates are solidly prepared for high school and college, especially in the areas of math, science, writing, and public speaking. HMJDS graduates have a well-defined sense of what being Jewish means to them personally, setting them on a path for a lifelong engagement with their religious and cultural heritage. HMJDS students gain acceptance to a wide variety of prestigious colleges and universities. Our 2014 HMJDS seniors are attending 15 different college and university programs. Budget and Financial Aid HMJDS’ FY 2014-15 budget is just under $4 million. The budget is balanced and the school is in a positive and stable financial position. Total financial aid is $848,700, or just under 24% of the budget. Approximately 38% of students receive some amount of financial aid. Other major revenue streams include tuition, fundraising, and endowment distributions. Development HMJDS’ annual giving in 2013-14 is $1.27 million, representing contributions from over 700 donors. Our fundraising achievement has grown substantially in the past few years, and, based on NAIS data, significantly exceeds the totals of other independent schools of comparable size. HMJDS has an endowment of $4.5 million; the school is planning an endowment campaign within the next few years.
