Mission Statement

Life House's mission is to reconnect homeless and street youth to their dreams. Our vision is that no youth will be left homeless, alone, uncared for, or fending for themselves on the streets.

About This Cause

Incorporated in 1991, Life House has provided homeless and street youth ages 14-21 with unconditional support, transitional housing, and a safe alternative to the streets for almost 25 years. Life House operates the only youth drop-in center in northeastern Minnesota, serving approximately 600 unduplicated youth and 75 of their young children annually. In 1996 Life House opened the first transitional living facility for homeless youth in Minnesota. Many youth first come to us needing clothes, a warm meal, or someone to talk to. Maybe they’ve been kicked out of their homes, are being sexually exploited, have a mental illness, or have been abandoned by parents or caregivers. Maybe they have substance use issues or are trying to care for small children of their own. Whatever brings them here, we never turn them away. Life House has an intensive intake survey to help determine program placement – these programs are all a part of the comprehensive approach to providing services that we call the Life House Lifeline. Youth Drop-in Center: Refuge, relief, and resources for homeless and street youth. The heart of Life House, the Life House Drop-in Center is the critical Lifeline for homeless and street youth. The only one of its kind in Northeastern Minnesota, services include hot meals, clothes, hygiene supplies, parenting supplies, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, movies, video games, ping-pong, field trips, and daily activities. Housing: A Safe place to to call home. A safe place to sleep is a luxury for street youth. Life House offers a path to housing stability for vulnerable homeless and street youth with extensive and ongoing services: Intensive Housing Program – providing Transitional and Permanent Supportive Housing. Rapid Rehousing Program – providing housing identification, rent and move-in assistance, and rapid re-housing case management and services. Preventive Housing Program – providing emergency rent support or landlord/tenant mediation. On-going Case Management – providing on-going support to our youth, even after they have “graduated” out of our intensive or prevention housing programs. Mental Health & Wellness: Peace of mind through resiliency and well-being. Life House Mental Health & Wellness program provides daily support and on-going services to improve physical, mental and spiritual wellness on-site, no-fee licensed therapist, intensive case management, culturally specific programming, Rule 25 & Diagnostic assessment, alcohol and chemical use counseling, and parenting education programming. Futures Education and Employment: An unconventional pathway for youth who want to reconnect to conventional systems. Participation in the Futures Program is voluntary and accessible to all Life House youth – youth who may have been expelled or dropped out of school, who have little to no job experience, or who simply want to further their education and employment skills.
