Mission Statement

Parenting With Purpose (PWP) is a 501c-3 human service organization. For the past 21 years, Parenting With Purpose has been serving families in the Twin Cities Metro area of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Parenting With Purpose’s mission is “Through mentoring, education and support, Parenting With Purpose will bring healing, restoration and liberty to families affected by incarceration.” PWP is committed to serve as a positive influence in the lives of children affected by a parent’s incarceration, as well as offering the support and training necessary for incarcerated parents to restore their family relationships. In addition we are a voice for the children we serve and the many that cannot speak for themselves.

About This Cause

Parenting With Purpose (PWP) was founded in 1995 in response to a needs assessment completed in conjunction with community members and prison officials. The organization is dedicated to breaking the intergenerational cycle of crime through providing support to entire families dealing with the trauma of incarceration. Parenting With Purpose is the only organization in Minnesota that provides services to the entire family affected by parental incarceration. We focus on families in the greater metro area of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Parenting With Purpose offers parent education and support to incarcerated parents as well as services for children of inmates, and numerous other programs that support the entire family affected by incarceration. Mission and Goals Parenting With Purpose’s organizational goals are: • Break the cycle of crime within families • Re-establish, strengthen, and maintain the emotional connection between parent and child. • Increase positive parental involvement in their child’s education, behavior, and well-being at home, in school, and in the community • Reduce the rate of recidivism, which is currently over 40% within 3 years of release in the US (State of Recidivism, PEW Center on the States) • Decrease the chances of self-destructive behavior • Improve relationships between youth, parent, and caregiver • Improve school attendance and academic achievement • Improve behavior in the home, school, and community Core programs Parenting With Purpose has developed and implemented two core programs to achieve organizational goals. Mentoring for Life Change (MLC) focuses on children and youth 5-25 years of age that have an incarcerated parent or a recently released parent. Research and case-by-case studies show that children of incarcerated parents are seven times more likely to become involved in the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. Parental arrest and confinement often lead to stress, trauma, stigmatization, and separation problems which may be compounded by existing poverty, violence, substance abuse, high-crime environments, child abuse, neglect, multiple caregivers and/or prior separations. These children are more likely to develop attachment disorders and often exhibit broad varieties of behavioral, emotional, health, and educational difficulties. The children of inmates are part of a special underserved community. The primary aim of MLC is to break the cycle of crime and violence by building positive youth assets into the lives of these children through caring adult mentors (Life Coaches). Mentors form positive relationships with a child based on their individual needs, using home visits, school visits, mentoring, and large group activities to offer ongoing support and guidance to the child. Our Parenting the Future With Purpose (PFWP) project provides education and support for incarcerated parents that leads to an improvement in parenting skills and strengthened family relationships, with the objective of equipping parents for their return to homes, families, and communities. Class sessions increase knowledge of good parenting skills and children’s needs, and help alleviate stress related to parenting skills and challenges. PFWP facilitates parenting classes in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Faribault (MCF-FRB); Mn Correctional Facility in Lino Lakes(MCF-LL), Mn Correctional Facility in Rush City(MCF-RC) and Hennepin County Adult Detention Center for women. In addition to serving parents, PFWP offers an umbrella of support services to the families affected by then incareceration of their loved one. We provide supportive home visits to encourage good behavior of the children in the home and at school. We help identify areas of need in the families and match them with resources that will accomplish their goals. Upon release from prison, PFWP also provides transition support services to those parents who desire to be reunited with their children and who live in the metro area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.
