About This Cause
Nokomis Healthy Seniors (NHS) is a Living at Home/Block Nurse Program that has served those in 15 neighborhoods in Minneapolis’ Nokomis area since 1994. Our mission is to help seniors remain healthy and live independently in their own homes—the ones they love and often, where they’ve raised their children—as long as it’s safe to do so. We assist in such key areas as providing programs, activities, and referrals to community resources and coordinating homecare services. Services are tailored to the individual and all programs have a social connection aspect and are low-cost. For 26 years, Nokomis Healthy Seniors has been helping area older adults continue to live safely and independently in the homes they love through our uniquely holistic approach to programming. With support from the Thorpe Foundation, once health officials have approved resuming in-person services, we will continue to offer a variety of program offerings that help seniors maintain their independence, with offerings including: Transportation to medical appointments and grocery and pharmacy shopping provided by area volunteers; Exercise classes 5 days a week, including yoga, chair exercise and a low impact aerobic exercise class; Volunteer companions; Service coordinators who help older adults access additional services; In-home healthcare management via a partnership with a homecare provider; Free weekly “Nurse is In” blood pressure check clinic and social time; Caregiver, low vision, and diabetes support groups; Health education and other topical seminars; brain-boosting activities; Fall prevention education; Foot care provided by a nurse (currently not being offered); and several social events each month, including outings, lunches, movies, games, a women’s art group, Book Club, Knitting Group, and a 500 Card Club.
