Great River Greening inspires, engages and leads local communities in conserving and caring for the land and water that enrich our lives.
About This Cause
Great River Greening began 20 years ago with a daring, new vision for community-led conservation: combine the ecological expertise and big impact expected from national-level organizations with the hands-on involvement and local support of grassroots organizations. Our first project involved 10,000 volunteers and 450 organizations helping to “green” the Saint Paul Mississippi River valley, planting 35,000 trees and shrubs along Saint Paul’s riverfront. We have since grown to become the state leader for community-based conservation. Great River Greening brings unique core competencies to our mission of restoring land, water and wonder: highly-trained ecologists, a dynamic community and youth involvement program, and a philosophy of collaboration that includes no advocacy. We engage people as part of the solution, guiding each new project not just by our ecological expertise and conservation priorities, but also by our ability to reach deep within the community, connecting with schools, businesses, churches, and other community groups. Rolled up shirtsleeves, dirt under our nails, we have worked side-by-side with 34,000 volunteers to improve, restore and care for Minnesota’s natural heritage – 12,000 acres and counting.
