About This Cause

People Serving People is the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused shelter in Minnesota. What distinguishes People Serving People from other emergency shelters is the broad range of on-site programs and services designed to address common barriers that homeless families are faced with. Our ultimate goal is to permanently end a family’s homelessness with one visit to our shelter. People Serving People provides the following Family Support Services at no charge to guests: Advocate Services refer guests to housing and community resources needed to return to self-sufficiency. Families receive an orientation to People Serving People; build a goal plan with their assigned Advocate Associate and schedule follow-ups to discuss their progress. Educational Services prepare children for kindergarten and improve the academic skills of school-aged children and youth. The Early Childhood Development Program (ages six weeks to five-years old) operates a licensed school for 52 children in four classrooms, five days a week. The Elementary Program (ages 5-12) offers individual tutoring, educational and enrichment activities, and access to community programs such as Girl and Boy Scouts and Free Arts Minnesota. The Teen Program (ages 13-17) includes individual tutoring, Youth Group, enrichment activities, and a new Digital Media Literacy program. The Adult Program offers tutoring and Family Activities, and Parent Engagement strengthens families through Parent Groups and individual meetings on parenting, life skills, and healthy child development. Employment Services help guests overcome their educational or professional barriers and secure stable employment. The Employment Program works with guests to assess their skills and work history, create resumes and cover letters, search for jobs, hold practice interviews, and complete applications. Culinary Arts Training teaches skills and techniques for professional cooking, both in the classroom and with hands-on experience in People Serving People’s Food Service. The Technology Resource Center provides computer access and increases computer literacy through job and housing searches as well as keyboarding and basic Microsoft Office assignments. Financial Fitness classes for money management are available for both adults and families.
