Mission Statement
The mission of Hamline Midway Elders is to provide volunteer and professional assistance to enable elders to remain in their own homes with independence, dignity and choice.
About This Cause
We have designed our program with a “neighbors helping neighbors” approach. The beginnings of our program go back to a block club leaders meeting in 1999. We have been a proud member of the Living at Home Network since we obtained nonprofit status back in 2001 as the Hamline Midway Living at Home/Block Nurse Program, but we go by the shorter name of Hamline Midway Elders. Our service area was initially limited to the Hamline Midway neighborhood of St. Paul. Due to a neighboring program closing, we began serving senior citizens in the western section of the Frogtown neighborhood over two years ago. We plan to increase our outreach efforts in this newer part of our service area as part of an expansion plan that our Board of Directors and staff developed through strategic planning in the summer of 2016. Our services fall into two categories. The first involves coordinating individual formal and informal services to seniors with the goal of helping to enable them to remain living in their homes for as long as they choose and is possible. The second relates to providing/coordinating a variety of health/wellness promotion activities with the goal of providing elders and the entire community with educational and social interaction opportunities. In 2016, we served a total of 252 individual seniors. Statistics include: • Over 700 units of service coordination (e.g. health advocacy, home safety, needs assessment), • Over 1,000 friendly home visits, • Over 1,150 rides (primarily to medical and grocery shopping) provided mainly by volunteers, • Over 400 units of chore services provided mainly by volunteers, and • Over 1,000 information and referrals were provided on a wide variety of topics (the program also maintains and distributes a 28 page resource list to any interested seniors). Over 150 health/wellness promotion activities were sponsored in 2016 with total attendance over 4,750. Highlights included: • An average of 78 participants attended our monthly 2nd Tuesday luncheons. Each luncheon featured a guest speaker chosen in part by the seniors.. • An average of 40 residents from Hamline Hi-Rise received volunteer baked goods almost every Monday morning. • An average of 15 seniors participated in two 8 week series of joint friendly exercise classes. • An average of 12 seniors participated in three 6 week series of Chair Yoga. • Over 125 community members enjoyed our annual summer Ice Cream Social. • Over 175 community members attended our annual fall Lasagna Dinner & Silent Auction. The goals & objectives of our services/programs for the next two years are to: 1. Implement an expansion plan (developed through Board/staff strategic planning) by hiring an additional staff, coordinating outreach in the newer part of our service area, and developing new individual and group programming. 2. Help enable seniors to remain living in their homes for as long as they choose by coordinating formal and informal services including Live Well at Home screenings, transportation, chore services, friendly visits/phone calls, caregiver support, blood pressure checks, information & referrals, and service coordination. 3. Provide seniors and other community members with education and social interaction opportunities in their neighborhood by coordinating a variety of health/wellness promotion activities including monthly luncheons, exercise classes, chair yoga classes, book giveaway events, library presentations, and several annual community events.
