Mission Statement

Building a Healthy Legacy: Our Prescription for the Future!

About This Cause

The Greater Seattle Chapter of The Links, Incorporated (GSCL), founded in 1955, is part of a national organization that is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The focus of this giving campaign is the GSCL’s Building STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Program. Donations should be directed to The Legacy Foundation, the non-profit arm of GSCL, which helps fund scholarships and programs—principally our Building STEAM Program. The mission of our Building STEAM program is to provide middle and high school students of color, from low to modest income households in South King County, with transformative experiences supporting their self-discovery, interest in, and aptitude for STEAM curricular and careers. The Building STEAM program was initiated in 2011, serves 65 middle and high school girls ranging from sixth to twelfth grades, and is fully supported by GSCL. The program provides hands-on learning experiences in STEAM subjects through project-based learning taught by credentialed instructors. The curriculum includes such topics as robotics, web design and video gaming. All classes are experiential with developmentally appropriate skill building, and opportunities to develop skills in leadership, technical innovation and teamwork. The young participants are enthusiastic about the program.
