DIMH will operate with grass-roots leadership that is spiritual and faith-based.
About This Cause
The Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (DIMH) has provided shelter, meals, and assistance to homeless men since 2008 to enable them to regain lives of productivity and purpose. Nearly three thousand men have been sheltered, using a 36-bed facility. More than 70% annually are successful in securing employment and housing. DIMH has also operated a daytime Resource Center open to all homeless adults since the beginning of 2015. The Center offers mail, laundry, and shower facilities along with access to registering for personal documentation and public benefits. Various educational programs are offered regularly on topics related to personal health, mental health, and well being as well as on time management, personal financial management and budgeting. Case management is available for shelter residents and Resource Center users, with 120 participating at one time. DIMH has developed highly-affordable housing accessible to those moving from homelessness to self-reliant living, both through the purchase and renovation of buildings and through leasing from local property owners. In larger group facilities, meals are provided along with all housing costs for a single monthly charge to residents. Currently, 60 beds of housing are managed, with more in development. DIMH has proven to be an effective community resource for the homeless. Results include the reduction of crime and loitering in downtown areas, and improved access for the homeless to health, mental health, employment, and many other resources. DIMH collaborates with many local organizations and has taken the leadership role in the Mayor's Task Force on Homelessness and in the creation of an additional housing development corporation with members from related organizations and local officials, called the Central Delaware Housing Collaborative. DIMH also engages volunteers and interns from over 50 diverse faith communities as well as local colleges and organizations. These volunteers provide dinner for about 40 shelter residents daily, providing more than 12,000 plates of dinner annually on a DIMH food budget of zero. DIMH is a recognized and valued resource in the Central Delaware community, with a proven record of success. Its annual operating budget of less than $400,000 has an impact of an estimated ten times this amount in the form of wages earned by those employed as a result of its efforts.
