About This Cause
For 150 years, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines has been serving central Iowa by providing programs that promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With seven branch locations, a supportive housing campus and Y camp, we are dedicated to providing services that address broad needs of our community by fostering health and well-being for all community members in order to achieve a healthier, strong community where everyone can thrive, grow, learn, work and play. We impact the community though our: A)Youth Development Programs including swim safety, sports and play programs promoting healthy and fun physical activities; child care, after-school programs; achievement gap programming designed to improve a child’s educational readiness and success; and Fatherhood classes helping build strong connections between fathers and their children. B) Healthy Living Programs offering group exercise, personal training, organized sports opportunities and chronic disease management programs such as diabetes prevention. C) Social Responsibility Programs is our commitment to respond to the community’s most critical social needs through advocacy and direct service as demonstrated by the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, which provides permanent housing for 140 homeless/at-risk men and women.
