Mission Statement

Tanager's mission is simple: to provide services to children and families that inspire, empower, and heal. Since our humble beginnings in as Linn County’s first children’s human service agency started in 1879, we’ve evolved to serve the ever-changing needs of our community. Our programs focus on prevention, treatment, and outreach and serve children, teens, and young adults. We support more than 4,000 youth and families annually—primarily across eastern Iowa—but all families are welcome at Tanager.

About This Cause

Tanager is dedicated to ensuring that all youth and families have accessible services to support ongoing mental well-being and resilience. We offer services across three pillars of care: Prevention, Treatment, and Outreach. Camp Tanager: Camp Tanager provides overnight and day camp programs for over 1,000 campers each summer. Campers from all backgrounds are welcome to attend our programs designed for fun, fitness, friendship, and learning. Over 500 campers attend at no cost through our free campership program. LGBTQ+ Youth Center: The LGBTQ+ Youth Center provides a safe and confidential environment for LGBTQ+ youth, families, and allies to connect and find support. The Center offers youth opportunities to build friendships, enhance life skills, and engage in new experiences. Outpatient and School-Based Mental Health Services: Outpatient services offer tools families need to overcome challenges together. Where others see obstacles, we see opportunity. Through compassionate, comprehensive treatment, we give children, teens, and families the best chance to overcome their hurdles and build a brighter future. Tanager's outpatient clinical services include individual, family, and group therapy, medication management, psychological testing, and multisystemic therapy. Community Based Services: Community-based services at Tanager meet youth and families where they are, often at home or in school. We create a customized treatment plan for each youth we serve. We also help families handle difficult behaviors and emotions by teaching them the skills needed to manage mental health challenges. Tanager has two community based services, including behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS) and Pediatric Integrated Health(PIH) Residential Services: Tanager provides a variety of residential care services for young people who experience more severe struggles related to mental well-being, including three unique programs. Our Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children (PMIC) programming occurs in a nurturing, home-like setting and centers around developing social, coping, and problem-solving skills. Our goal is to use trauma-informed care components to help youth reach their full potential and build positive, strong relationships so they can return home as soon as possible. Programs are staffed by an interdisciplinary team of specialists who provide strengths-based care for every child and teen who walks through our doors. This multidisciplinary team includes child psychiatrists, nursing staff, counselors, and direct-care staff to ensure your child receives the care they need. Intermediate Care Facility for Intellectual Disability (ICF/ID) programs offer a safe and supportive environment to children and adolescents with mild intellectual disabilities and behavioral challenges. Active treatment is individually tailored to improve and maintain skills and foster greater self-reliance and independence. The interdisciplinary team includes child psychiatrists, nursing staff, master’s level therapists, bachelor’s level counselors, and direct-care staff to ensure your child receives the care they need. According to cognitive ability and age appropriateness, children will get involved in treatment modalities such as recreation, art, music therapy, and individual, group, and family therapy/counseling. Tanager's Summit House provides Crisis Stabilization services, which are short-term services offered in a residential setting. The Summit House aims to provide a safe, secure environment to help youth stabilize and reintegrate into the community. This is a short-term voluntary placement option for youth 17 and under (the average length of stay is five days or less). While at the Summit House, youth collaborate with Tanager’s interdisciplinary team, families, referring workers, program staff, and youth to assess treatment needs, identify measurable goals, and participate in an open discussion of options, expectations, and timelines for achieving safety and stability. Expressive Arts Program: Tanager believes Expressive Arts is an integral part of prevention and treatment. Together with trained art, music, and drama therapists, children enrolled in the Expressive Arts program work to unlock emotions, memories, and experiences through visual arts, music, or creative writing. This interactive process helps children struggling with complicated emotions communicate through artistic expression.
