Mission Statement
YWCA Clinton is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice freedom and dignity for all.
About This Cause
Founded in 1915 by a group of women who met as a Bible study group, the YWCA has evolved as programs and services have changed to meet the needs of women and families in our community. Our mission, eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, is the cornerstone on which programs are planned and that vision drives the YWCA to create opportunities for growth, leadership and power for women, girls, and their families. YWCA Clinton carries out our mission through our various programs and services which address women’s empowerment, racial justice, women’s and their families’ health, childcare, youth programming, and community collaborations for social change throughout Clinton and Jackson counties in Iowa and Whiteside County, in Illinois. • The YWCA Empowerment Center assists families with children and individuals in both Clinton and Jackson Counties who are experiencing or on the verge of experiencing homelessness through our Rapid Rehousing and Homelessness Prevention programs. The goal of the YWCA Empowerment Center is to empower individuals affected by homelessness. Our program provides safe, affordable, violence-free housing as well as on-going case-management services to women, women with children, men and families. • The YWCA Children’s Center offers two convenient locations, extended childcare, open until midnight for working women and families. Partnering with local school district in providing 4-year-old preschool program; 3-year-old preschool scholarships, 60-80% of the families we serve receive DHS assistance. At the YWCA Children’s Center, we believe all children have a right to receive quality preschool and childcare in a safe and nurturing environment. • The YWCA Youth Program offers after school, summer camp, Wednesday early out care, holiday camp, and youth programming for K-5 children, with nearly 80% of our families receiving DHS assistance. • YWise Girls is a program for young women in 3rd – 8th grades that promotes positive self-esteem and leadership roles for young women in our community. • YWCA Clinton offers Worthy Child memberships for local at-risk children, as identified by school counselors and healthcare workers. • YWCA Clinton’s Health & Wellness Program offers various health & wellness offerings for women and their families, with nearly 2,000 members, and featuring the area’s only indoor community pool within a 20-mile radius. • YWCA Clinton is the only area center offering senior-friendly fitness classes and social outings, providing a vibrant retirement for our area seniors. Fall-prevention, balance, muscle-strengthening and overall flexibility are the core goals for this senior wellness program. Helping our members become strong and steady for life ultimately, living a healthy well-balanced life. • Since 1973, YWCA Clinton has recognized the achievements of women in our community through the annual YWCA Woman of Achievement Awards. • January 2018 marked the 30th year of our community-wide MLK Celebration. Each January we celebrate Dr. King's vision of peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The MLK Planning Committee has brought in programs and people who have inspired, entertained and generated discussion, as we all come together to remember the work and vision of Dr. King. • YWCA Clinton hosts a bi-monthly Diversity Book Club, leading discussions with community members about racial justice issues at our local community college. • YWCA Clinton hosts the Traveling Diversity Library. Race, ethnicity, and poverty are themes addressed within the collection that travels to local schools and organizations, generating awareness and discussion. • Since 1995, YWCA Clinton has participated in the Week Without Violence. This year’s events include a Candidates Forum, a meditation for peaceful alignment, and a free screening of the film, "Resilience, the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope." Resilience is a documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), such as violence, and a new movement to treat and prevent toxic stress. • YWCA Clinton’s Stand Against Racism is embraced by the community and Clinton Community Schools as a time to collectively take a stand against racism in our community. • YWCA Clinton hosts bi-annual Candidates Forums to ask local, county and state policy-making candidates to directly address issues as they relate to the YWCA’s mission. • YWCA Clinton invites local legislators to our annual Legislative Breakfast to discuss policies and issues as they relate to the YWCA mission and YWCA Clinton’s impact in the community. • The Stop the Hate / Show the Love Annual Walk for Peace is held annually in our community on the Thursday closest to the September 21st global observance of the U. N. International Day of Peace. The Peace Walk is organized by the Clinton Peace Coalition.
