Mission Statement
The Iowa International Center welcomes the world to Iowa with program, services, and opportunities that build cultural understanding here and around the world, one person at a time.
About This Cause
The Iowa International Center was founded in 1938 to assist refugees fleeing Europe during World War II. Since then, its scope of operation has grown to include a variety of programs and services dedicated to building cultural respect at home and around the world one person at a time. The Iowa International Center is a private, non-profit organization that depends on the generosity of individuals and corporations who support and promote world peace and understanding. Our programs and services include accessible ESL classes in community gathering places with high populations of non-English proficient residents, offering not only instruction in written and spoken English but also critical life skills. The Iowa International Center hosts hundreds of international visitors in Central Iowa through it's Sehgal Foundation International Visitors Center, which hosts the US Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program and USAID's Community Connections Program. We also have international events and forums, which are open to the community. We are Iowa's premiere interpretation and translation service with over 60 different languages available for in person appointments, as well as 220 available via phone. The Iowa International Center offers a multilingual resource guide for new Iowans at www.welcometoiowa.org. Available in 80 languages, this site offers guidance on finances, ESL classes, employment opportunities, medical aid, bus routes, housing, and food or clothing assistance.
