Mission Statement
The Oakridge Community creates pathways to prosperity for adults, children and families by providing affordable housing, culturally diverse education programs, and comprehensive employability programs.
About This Cause
For over 55 years, Oakridge Neighborhood has provided safe, affordable housing and supportive wraparound services to create opportunities for individual and family success. A nonprofit housing and human services agency located in Des Moines’ urban core, Oakridge Neighborhood is not just a housing facility, but truly a neighborhood, a diverse community of people gaining stability while preparing for the next step in their life’s journey. Oakridge Neighborhood is Iowa’s largest project based Section 8 housing complex with over 300 townhome units ranging from studios to five-bedroom units. In addition, in 2013 Silver Oaks opened with 39 one- and two-bedroom senior living apartment homes. Oakridge is a cultural melting pot, and serves as a housing hub for immigrants and refugees who hail from over 23 countries and speak more than 29 languages. Of the 1,000 residents living on the Oakridge campus, half are children under the age of 18, 75% are refugees and immigrants, and 99% are considered poor (employed but income does not cover basic needs) or extremely poor (struggling or unable to afford basic needs). The Oakridge model is a dual-generation operation: connecting low-income families with early childhood education, out of school youth programming, adult job placement and resources, plus other tools to achieve financial stability. Programs and services are available to residents and others in the greater Des Moines community, as well. Family & Workforce Program - Career Services, Workforce Readiness, Driver's Ed, HOPE for Stable Families, Financial Literacy, ELL, and Citizenship Classes Youth Programs - Oakridge is a designated 21st Century Learning Center providing much needed support through after-school and out-of-school programming focused on the academic, social, emotional, and enrichment needs of students.
