Mission Statement
The Food Bank of Siouxland is a nonprofit organization committed to soliciting and distributing food to community charities with feeding programs for the needy. We are the main supplier for nonprofits of all types, including food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, residential facilities, day care and senior centers, etc.
About This Cause
The Food Bank of Siouxland distributes food to about 100 nonprofit member agencies that feed hungry and needy people in Siouxland. Our service area includes: Cherokee, Crawford, Ida, Lyon, Monona, Plymouth, Sioux, and Wood bury Counties in Iowa; and Burt, Dakota, and Thurston Counties in Nebraska. We acquire food via donations, including many retail store partners; USDA Commodities; and through a purchasing program. The agencies order food from an ever-changing list of available items. Orders are pulled, packed, and either picked up by the agencies or delivered by the Food Bank's trucks. Through the help of agencies throughout Siouxland, the Food Bank of Siouxland was able to distribute 2.1 million pounds of food in FY'16. In addition to serving the needy through our member organizations, we also have two direct support programs - our BackPack Program: Food for Kids, and our Mobile Pantry Program: Food to You. The BackPack Program: Food for Kids is a take home food program for children during the school year, designed to provide a weekly sack of shelf-stable food to get students through the weekend when school meals are not available. By alleviating hunger among low-income children, we are in essence helping them improve school performance and reduce health problems due to under-nutrition. This program is supported entirely by gifts, grants and donations. The Mobile Pantry Program: Food to You is a food pantry on wheels! We partner with host sites to set up temporary pantries in food insecure areas, known as "food deserts." At each distribution, thousands of pounds of wholesome and nutritious food are taken home by families and individuals in need. This program is extremely important for our rural communities.
