About This Cause

The Twenty Pearls Foundation co-sponsors an annual Community Health Fair in Oakland, awards annual scholarships to students in need, and provides micro-grants to community partners aligned with the mission and purpose of the Twenty Pearls Foundation. In March 2016, the Twenty Pearls Foundation co-sponsored the 6th Annual Community Health Fair at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Oakland. The fair offered free health screenings for diabetes, high blood pressure, stress and a mobile eye clinic. Workshops were offered for financial literacy, heart health, and stress management. Admittance is free, and lunch is provided to all present. In 2016, the Twenty Pearls Foundation awarded $15,000 in scholarships to 17 deserving students. Recipients were selected based on academic achievement, community involvement, and financial need. In memory of her commitment to education and in honor of her 50+ years of service in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. the Jewell Boutté scholarship was established to support the continuing education of an active, undergraduate member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at California State East Bay, Holy Names University, or Mills College. The $500, one-time, grant is awarded by the Twenty Pearls Foundation, Inc. board annually, based on expressed need, demonstrated community service, and completed grant application. The Mildred Caver grant is established to honor the life, work, and service of Mrs. Mildred Hawthorne Caver to the Oakland community. Mrs. Caver served the children of Oakland through her 30 plus years as a school librarian in the Oakland Unified School District, her church and her community through her Christian service, and to her sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, where she served as long time chaplain to her chapter, Xi Gamma Omega. The $250, one-time, grants are awarded by the Twenty Pearls Foundation, Inc. board annually, based on expressed need, demonstrated community service, and completed grant application.
