Mission Statement

Fresno Chaffee Zoo inspires people to care for animals, create connections, build community, and save wildlife.

About This Cause

Fresno Chaffee Zoo is a renowned educational and wildlife conservation institution in Fresno County, home to over 200 species and 1,000 individual wild animals. Celebrating its Centennial in 2029, the Zoo attracts over 840,000 guests annually and offers a unique, one-of-a-kind visitor experience. Through engaging programs, initiatives, and public events, it fulfills its mission to inspire people to care for animals, create connections, build community, and save wildlife. Our vision for the future involves engaging the public to help shape a world where people and wildlife can coexist and thrive together.   The Zoo, a key community hub in the Central Valley, fosters connections between people and wildlife. It offers volunteer opportunities for residents, collaborates with other local nonprofit organizations, and hosts community events that celebrate the Central Valley's vibrant mix of ethnic heritage. These activities strengthen the Zoo's impact by providing a space for learning and exchange. The Zoo also extends its outreach into the community by bringing wildlife ambassador encounters to local schools and community centers, providing children and seniors with the opportunity to experience the wonder of wildlife up close. Some examples of our community events include Black History Month, Rainbow Family Day, and Día de Muertos, which are all part of our efforts to celebrate and promote the Central Valley's diverse cultural heritage. Other Zoo events that build community include Party for the Planet (Earth Day) and Kids Day. As part of our mission, Fresno Chaffee Zoo is committed to:   Provide expert, compassionate care for over 1,000 wild animals, from our majestic elephants to our tiny tree frogs — care that has led to incredible moments like the births of our first-ever elephant calves, lion cubs, baby rhinos, condor chicks, meerkats, warthogs, colobus monkeys, and many more. These births are wildlife conservation successes that are made possible through the philanthropy of our dedicated list of supporters and guests. Build meaningful connections between guests and wildlife through immersive experiences like Sea Lion Cove, African Adventure, and Kingdoms of Asia—allowing our guests to understand the animals in our care as ambassadors for their wild counterparts.  Offer vital educational programming and community outreach including partnership initiatives like Welcome Wednesdays, After-School at the Zoo, Art in the Wild and our partnership with Golden Charter Academy. These programs create safe, inspiring spaces for all children, including those in temporary housing, to learn, explore, and grow.  Save endangered species around the world — like African elephants, Malayan tigers, Sumatran orangutans, cheetahs, sloth bears, and more — and right here at home where Fresno Chaffee Zoo is rescuing the last remaining wild populations of the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, found nowhere else but in the Central Valley.  While Measure Z funding has been instrumental in transforming our Zoo with new exhibits and critical capital improvements, it supports an ever-decreasing portion of our operating costs. We want to emphasize that the Zoo's continued success and ability to deliver exceptional animal care, impactful programming, and unforgettable experiences are reliant on the support of our community. In addition to earned revenue, we also rely on corporate support and private philanthropy to fill the gap, ensuring that the Zoo remains a true treasure for the Central Valley and beyond.
