To create projects that need to be done in America, and to do such a good job that many people join in, and to include veterans when possible.
About This Cause
INTRODUCTION The American Rosie Movement (ARM)™ is a new kind of social movement which guides people to "do something" (locally-to-internationally) that reflects the work ethic and importance of American Rosie the Riveters (“Rosies”). Rosies are women who pulled together during World War II to work in unprecedented ways on the home front in factories, offices, shipyards, farms, performing many jobs that helped Allied Forces shorten and win World War II. ARM was created by the non-profit organization Thanks! Plain and Simple™ (“Thanks!”). Its founder is the daughter of a Rosie and has a solid history of commitment to a workable democracy. ARM is different from most other social movements. It is founded on 12+ years of work to gather important data, know-how, and show-how which now are being integrated into a national movement. Over those 12 years, “Thanks!” has learned how to connect people across many differences (e.g., locations in the US, heritage, religious and political preferences, economic levels). This is particularly vital at this time when Americans are more divisive than ever. I. GOALS: A. By the end of 2022: Three major goals will be reached: 1) One million Americans will be searching for and getting to know living Rosie the Riveters. 2) At least five new communities will be creating and planning projects that leave a lasting record of Rosie and the Rosie Legacy™. 3) National media will be telling heartfelt stories of Rosies who have helped us establish the American Rosie Movement™. B. By the end of 2023: Two major goals will be reached: 1) The American Rosie Movement™ will be a “household phrase.” 2) Writings about The American Rosie Movement™ and its development will be completed and distributed. C. From 2024 into the future: People will participate in new methods of decision-making and doing work. II. REASONS ROSIES ARE IMPORTANT FOR A NEW SOCIAL MOVEMENT: Rosies prove that: A. People can pull together to solve common problems; B. People can create and build things together that bring pride and cooperation; C. The value of women in a healthy democracy; D. Women do not need to male-bash in order to succeed; E. Seniors are of great worth to a working democracy; F. Rosies are proof that people learn best by doing; G. The women’s equality movement needs multiple generations; H. People will unify without protesting if well guided. III. PHASES, PLACES, PROJECTS, PEOPLE AND PARTNERS PHASES Phase I (2008 through 2019) taught us how to find and interview Rosies as a way to connect communities to the fascinating real-world women who are largely underappreciated. It also taught us how to work with people in many places to do lasting projects that improve their communities while they connect people to one another. Phase II (2020 till 2024) is to successfully launch this new type of social movement in America. Today we are expanding the know-how and show-how of Phase I to reach all of America and other partnering nations. People love to be involved in knowing living Rosies even though they are above 92 years old, and they are especially delighted to hear the very human stories of these women’s lives and their love for democracy. Phase III (2024-future decades) will keep improving the process of pulling together to face new problems. PLACES: At least 100 locations have participated in the “Ring a Bell for Rosies” event which has been held on six Labor Days. Six cities we celebrated as models were: Washington, DC.; Nijmegen, NL; Philadelphia, PA; Huntington, WV; Camden, SC; Brunswick, MD. PROJECTS: Projects that we have designed to inspire people to participate include: Named the first government building after Rosie the Riveter; Named two interstate bridges for Rosie the Riveter; Got artwork by children and adult artists that help us show the public what they can do; Designed ads that help communities find Rosies; Created videos of Rosies (e.g., documentary film, first-rate events, music; Created permanent displays for libraries and businesses; Interviewed over 150 Rosies and saved, transcribed and distributed them; Planted victory gardens where people grow their own food; Held events for people (the public, ambassadors, etc.) to know Rosies; Created original music that tells the Rosie story; Collected photographs of Rosies as young women and now; Built a Rosie park, which includes many items significant to Rosies. PEOPLE AND PARTNERS: Some of many more people/partners are: Bill Kaemmer, Ex. Dir., for the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, Washington DC; Ceryl Johns, Col., Camden, SC; City of Washington, Women’s Div. and Dept. of Aging; Civic organizations (e.g., Girl Scouts of America, American Legions, Lions Clubs, General Fed. of Women’s Clubs, the DAR); Consuela Mackey, Ex. Dir., Operation Confidence, Los Angeles., CA; Embassy of the Netherlands, Washington, DC; Erika Klose, WV Dept. of Ed.; Freedom Museum, Nijmegen NL; Harvey Glover, SBA executive, Washington, DC; Jay Wertz, WWII author/interviewer, FL; Joey Wiseman, Dir., Secondary Education, WV; Karin Tome, previous mayor, MD; Susan Patten, Wreaths Across America, ME; T. Ford-Ahmed, Ph.D., Prof. marketing specialist, Athens, OH; Vicky Wilkins, Dean, Public Policy, American Univ., Washington, D.C.; W. Yoo, Ph.D., Dir. of Computer Science Research, Marshall Univ. IV. WHO WE ARE AND ARE NOT 1) We ARE: 1. A project-management nonprofit organization as well as an organization that promotes to understanding of history, women, community development, etc. 2. A success by many measures (e.g., knowing and telling powerful stories of Rosies, creating projects that people in many places take part in). 3. A model that encourages many people, places and projects to also be models. 4. Egalitarian in mission, actuality, and organizational structure 5. Proof that a social movement can be strategically and efficiently planned and managed while it still connects people to very human stories and hopes. 6. Preparing for 2022 to be, “The Year of Our Rosies” with the help of many new people, places, partners and projects, especially the nation-wide project to find our Rosies. 7. Transitioning from a small close-knit organization to one that will be much larger, adaptable, and lasting. 8. Worth several million dollars, if our collection, stories, and process are kept intact and understood. 9. Prepared to grow, and we are beginning to update our business plan for $13.7M, which was written before COVID-19. 10. Fully committed to guiding people to “own” a new kind of social movement that includes diverse people, by tying very human stories to well managed projects that improve our communities and nations. 2) We are NOT: An association serving a select population; competing with other Rosie-advocate groups or social movements; anti-male, protesters or blamers; headed by a charismatic leader with impassioned speeches; just history, since we promote project creation; ashamed that we have operated on a modest budget in order to be independent enough to build a strong, meaningful foundation; government driven, although we include government; naïve about the difficulties of transitioning to a social movement. V. THREATS, OPPORTUNITIES, WEAKNESSES, STRENGTHS 1) Threats outside “Thanks!” are: time is very short; many Americans does not know who Rosies are or what they did; some potential partners have not recognized the benefits to them by joining ARM. 2) Opportunities outside “Thanks!” are: Americans are known to unify when they have a common goal to reach in a short time; with COVID, Americans see a great need to unify; Americans and others love Rosies; people and organizations are proud to show what they have done. 3) Weaknesses within “Thanks!” are: current cash flow is inadequate to launch ARM; all needed partners are not yet identified; quality and quantity of work done will take time to organize. 4) Strengths within “Thanks!” are: we have proven that people will pull together to know and work with American Rosies; the time is right for a social movement that unifies people around the strengths and hopes of people; some adventures we have had are worthy of a Netflix series, films, and/or national storytelling; people now see that knowing Rosies helps them pull together; partners are strong, and growing; with some editing, our business plan is ready; many places are excited to be model communities. VI. VALUE TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE TODAY: The monetary value of our cumulative resources (gathered from 2008 to now), have not been third-party assessed. The value is much higher if the collection is kept intact and not split into parts. A brief summary of the value today is: 1. Tangible items include (but are not limited to) a documentary film called, “We Pulled Together: Rosie the Riveters Then and Now,” 180 interviews; 20 projects; recognition by royalty, well-known persons and organizations; partnerships with known organizations; proprietary property (e.g., original music, art); 13 years of video; trademarks; photos, etc. 2. Intangible items include (but are not limited to) the three-phase strategic plan of ARM™; know-how and show-how to advance high-quality projects; 3 books in progress; and extensive knowledge of the public’s keen interest in knowing the fascinating stories of Rosies and the 14-year development of ARM. FUTURE: Near- and long-term work will greatly impact our value. VII. RESOURCES NEEDED: To grow rapidly, we need: 1) Technology and staff for internal operations; 2) Partners/collaborators for external work (e.g., project and program management, fundraising, public opinion, public policy, computer science, social and mass communications, manager of volunteers, and writers for articles, books and scripts); 3) Accomplished opinion leaders who show deserved respect to the movement; 4) In-Kind and volunteer contributors.
