Mission Statement
The Mission of the Friendship Center at New Covenant United Methodist Church is to provide warm, nourishing meals and other food assistance three days a week for our most vulnerable, destitute and food insecure local residents, without regard for religious affiliation or belief or lack thereof.
About This Cause
The Friendship Center Soup Kitchen for many years served our East Hartford neighbors as a program of East Hartford Interfaith Ministries (EHIM). When EHIM made the difficult decision to dissolve its organization as of December 31, 2022, The Friendship Center Soup Kitchen found a new home at New Covenant United Methodist Church, where it has been "up and running" since February 1, 2023. This short turn-around has meant a great deal to clients struggling to make ends meet. The Friendship Center serves a free, hot evening meal to an average of 55-60 individuals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week, and is open to any and all who are in need of a meal. In addition to a nourishing "to-go" dinner, clients are provided with extra food items (fresh fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, cereal, snacks, etc.) to tide them over until the next time the Friendship Center is open. We frequently have toiletries and/or clothing items to offer them as well. Clients come from a cross-section of ages and ethnic backgrounds within the community including the elderly or disabled, families with children, or the working poor who are not able to provide enough food for their families. Many of them are living with mental health or substance abuse issues, homelessness, job loss or lack of medical care. We are here to serve them. The Friendship Center requests donations from the community and businesses to provide the food and supplies needed for the meals. Volunteers from the local community including churches and some businesses, assist the staff with meal preparation. There is no religious requirement or religious test to receive a meal at the Friendship Center. The activities of the Friendship Center are housed within the church building, but are separated in both time and location from the religious activities of the church. Any donations received by the New Covenant United Methodist Church that are earmarked for the Friendship Center Soup Kitchen will be so designated, and used solely for the benefit of the Friendship Center.
