Mission Statement
Our mission is to rescue and provide sanctuary for abused and neglected horses in Napa and surrounding counties, as well as educate the public about current issues affecting horse welfare, and provide community members with the unique benefit of equine assisted learning and therapy.
About This Cause
WHO WE ARE Sunrise Horse Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2007 in Saint Helena, California. We are dedicated to saving and rehabilitating vulnerable horses in need. Since its inception, Sunrise has rescued and provided homes to hundreds of at-risk horses. Our organization is run by staff, a board of directors, and volunteers. Two veterinarians from the esteemed Napa Valley Equine veterinary practice support our organization. Dr. Vanessa G.B. Rood is our Herd Health & Welfare Advisor. Dr. Claudia Sonder, former Director of the Center for Equine Health at UC Davis, serves on our board of directors. EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING AND THERAPY At Sunrise Horse Rescue, we strive to raise up the message that horses have value beyond being ridden. Waking up the senses, heart and mind, Sunrise programs are designed to connect horses with the humans in our community, and focus on learning, communication, and nature. Horses are experts at teaching communication and emotional regulation. Programs include those for people living with dementia and their caregivers, at-risk youth, cancer survivors, personal development, team building, and children learning about the natural world. From scouts to senior citizens, everyone gains a sense of healing and hope. The horses have a role again and thrive on the interaction. And the benefits are mutual. A bond made with a horse can be magical and often leaves us wondering, "Who's saving whom?" OUR HORSES The horses that Sunrise helps are often severely neglected, abused, or abandoned. But once they arrive at the rescue, the story of their life reopens. They receive veterinary care, nutritionally balanced feed and supplements, training, and love from gentle people who truly care about their wellbeing. They learn to feel safe and trust again. Pretty soon, it is the horse that is helping us to heal, teaching us lessons about forgiveness and communication and enhancing our lives. HORSES IN NEED PROGRAM The Sunrise Horse in Need Program is a dynamic lifeline, committed to responding with resources and support to horses in desperate and immediate need. Feed support and veterinary care are provided to alleviate hunger and pain. Sunrise receives calls weekly from community members or owners alerting us to horses in peril. Last year alone we responded to over 100 calls, giving each the attention and resources needed to help the horse reach a safer place or enter our sanctuary. Each horse is only one owner away from neglect, and the Sunrise Horse in Need program has helped keep hundreds of horses from the risk of being abandoned, neglected, abused, or sent to slaughter. HOW YOU CAN HELP We are grateful to be part of a community that cares. We rely 100% on donations and grants to support the horses in our sanctuary and to help horses in desperate need in our area. The average cost for feed and vet care for each horse is approximately $8,000 per year. Your donation will truly make a difference in the life of a horse.
