Mission Statement
Friends of WHEELS provides financial and supportive resources for college access and persistence services at the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS).
About This Cause
Friends of WHEELS was created to ensure that our students – 90% of whom will be the first in their families to attend college – have the information, counseling, and extracurricular experiences they need to access college and succeed as college students. The organization supports an integrated portfolio of services that help students cultivate a college-going identity, navigate the application and financial aid processes, and master the life skills that are required for success in college and beyond. With a nonprofit arm specifically designed to support college access and persistence services, the school is better positioned to expose students to a variety of college campuses, achieve a staff-to-student college-advising ratio akin to affluent districts, provide targeted, unique alumni support to ensure college persistence, and reinvest the public school budget in curriculum and instruction to bolster students’ academic readiness for college.
