Mission Statement
Girl Scouts, the preeminent organization for girls, is building a pipeline of future leaders by preparing girls (K-12th grade) to tackle important issues throughout their lives with courage and compassion. Girl Scouts combines time-honored values with relevant and contemporary programming. Our purpose is to build female leaders from all backgrounds—girls with tenacity—leaders who lead like a G.I.R.L.™: (1) Go-getters—express vision, ambition, and persistence through challenges; (2) Innovators—problem solve with creativity, curiosity, and resourcefulness; (3) Risk-Takers—make decisions, face fear, take on new experiences; and (4) Leaders—empathize, identify strengths, and empower others. We are building the future female leaders for the workplace, the community, and the home.
About This Cause
Our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Through activities in science and technology, business and economic literacy, and outdoor and environmental awareness, Girl Scouting provides girls with opportunities for fun and friendship, while fostering development of leadership skills and self-esteem. Founded by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912, Girl Scouts serves more than 1.9 million girl members from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri is one of 112 councils across the United States. Our council is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA and supports about 23,000 girl members and 8,000 adult volunteers in its 47 county jurisdiction surrounding the Greater Kansas City, Topeka and St. Joseph areas. The counties we serve include: Kansas: Atchison, Anderson, Brown, Clay, Doniphan, Douglas, Geary, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Marshall, Miami, Nemaha, Pottawatomie, Riley, Shawnee, Wabaunsee, Washington and Wyandotte. Missouri: Andrew, Atchison, Bates, Buchanan, Caldwell, Carroll, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Henry, Holt, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Livingston, Mercer, Nodaway, Platte, Ray, and Worth.G Girls are organized into troops reflecting six program grade levels: DAISIES, K-1; BROWNIES, 2-3; JUNIORS, 4-5; CADETTES, 6-8; SENIORS, 9-10; and AMBASSADORS, 11-12. Our signature Girl Scout Leadership Experience model—Discover, Connect, Take Action—is the foundation for every Girl Scout’s journey and was designed to empower girls to take action and make the world a better place. This model begins with a definition of leadership that girls understand and believe in: leaders are defined not only by their qualities and skills, but also by how they use those qualities and skills to improve the world they live in. Discover: First, we help girls discover their own skills, talents, and confidence in setting and achieving challenging goals. In doing so, girls develop a strong sense of self and gain perspective about where they come from and where they are going. Connect: Second, we help girls connect with others to solve problems, resolve conflicts, and build healthy, positive relationships. Not only are these skills critical to girls in navigating their youth, but they also prepare girls for success in their careers and adult relationships. Take Action: Finally, we empower girls to take action for the greater good. This means imagining improvements to their community—or the world—and taking steps to bring about positive change. Girl Scouts’ grade-appropriate, outcomes-based curriculum includes “Journeys” and our iconic skill-based badges. Journeys offer 18 publications, each offering a themed, age-appropriate program, centered around our priority areas—life skills, STEM, financial literacy, the outdoors and environmental stewardship, and healthy lifestyles. The content of all Girl Scout national proficiency badges and journeys have been correlated by grade level to national Common Core Standards, 21st Century Skills standards, Financial Literacy education standards, and curriculum such as Health and PE, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
