Mission Statement
Operation Breakthrough's mission is to provide a safe, loving and educational environment for children in poverty and to empower their families through advocacy, emergency aid and education.
About This Cause
Operation Breakthrough, founded in 1971, provides care and education to more than 700 urban Kansas City children daily and empowers their parents through advocacy, emergency services and education. More than 70% of our families survive on income of less than $12,000 a year. About 20% of our children are homeless at any given time. More than 65% of our children have witnessed violence before age 5. Our full day early learning program prepares children, ages 0 to 5, for kindergarten, with more than 90% of our 5-year-olds testing as "kindergarten ready." (Nationally, fewer than 50% of children in poverty enter school ready to learn.) Our before- and after-school/summer program gives children ages 5 to 18 the academic support, character education and career development opportunities they need to succeed in school and in life. Services including on-site pediatric medical and dental care, speech and occupational therapy and mental health programming ensure that children are ready for success. Literacy is a top priority for all children, with reading on or above grade level by 3rd grade as the goal. Operation Breakthrough's MakerSpace and STEM lab give children 3 to 14 opportunities to experiment with cooking, computer coding, visual art, construction, digital media and much more, with the goal of preparing them to be 21st-century collaborators, creators and problem solvers. While children are with us, low-income parents can work, or finish school or seek job training. In addition, Operation Breakthrough offers parenting classes, assistance finding housing and employment, a food pantry and clothing closet, support groups and adult therapy. Operation Breakthrough believes this two-generation approach is essential to help children in poverty reach their full potential.
