About This Cause

Welcome House is a Kansas City-based nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to providing a structured, residential recovery program for adult men overcoming substance use disorder (SUD). Our mission is to offer accountability, support, and a path to long-term recovery. We are a 100-bed residential Recovery Center with multipurpose spaces for daily 12-step recovery meetings and classes, but what sets Welcome House apart is our low-barrier admission policy, catering to the underserved without requiring insurance, income or employment, or even a state ID. This means that regardless of your situation- if you are an adult male who has a sincere desire to learn how to live clean and sober, we welcome you in. Our low-barrier admission policy is what sets it apart, catering to the underserved without requiring insurance, income, housing, or any other barriers, which allows us to target high-risk populations of those recently released from incarceration, unemployed, homeless, and from drug-heavy pockets of our community. The Welcome House provides 3+ meals daily, employment opportunities, social arts and cultural activities, and SUD recovery education for individuals committed to rebuilding their lives. Since its founding in 1971, Welcome House has helped tens of thousands of men on their road to recovery, fostering hope, healing, and transformation. With the support of donors, volunteers, and community partners, we continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve. At Welcome House, we understand that recovery thrives in a community setting. Our programs are designed to foster connection and create opportunities for residents to build their support networks. Here’s how: Peer Support and AA/NA Meetings: Regular AA and NA meetings on-site provide a structured environment for sharing experiences, learning from others, and building connections. Peer Mentorship: Residents can connect with peer counselors who understand the challenges of recovery and offer guidance and encouragement. Connecting with others who have faced similar struggles can be incredibly empowering. Peers in recovery can offer insights, share coping strategies, and provide hope by demonstrating that lasting change is possible. Community Activities: Events like creative workshops, outdoor excursions, and shared meals encourage residents to bond over positive, recovery-focused experiences. Family Involvement: We encourage residents to involve their families in their recovery journey, helping to repair and strengthen relationships that may have been strained by addiction. Emotional Support: Recovery is an emotional rollercoaster filled with highs and lows. Having a trusted group of people to lean on can provide comfort, understanding, and a safe space to process emotions. Whether celebrating milestones or navigating setbacks, emotional support helps individuals feel seen and valued. Accountability and Motivation: Support networks are crucial in holding individuals accountable for their recovery goals. Knowing that others are invested in their success can motivate individuals to stay on track, attend meetings, and follow through on their commitments. Building New, Healthy Relationships: Recovery often involves distancing oneself from environments and relationships that enable substance use. Support networks provide an opportunity to form new, positive connections that align with a healthier lifestyle in recovery. Encouragement to Never Give Up: A relapse can be disheartening, but a supportive network helps individuals view these moments as part of the recovery journey rather than as failures. Encouragement from peers and loved ones can inspire individuals to get back on track and continue their progress. After a setback, the individual is encouraged to reapply for residency and hit the restart button on recovery.
