About This Cause

Independence Meals on Wheels, Inc. (MOW) was incorporated September 23, 1975 as a General Not for Profit Corporation and has provided continuous service to Independence residents since incorporation. The mission of the organization is to serve nutritious hot meals to housebound, physically handicapped, the blind, the aged, the senile, the needy, and those suffering from mental illness; providing them with charitable and personal contact with the outside world. MOW contracts with the NorthWest Communities Development Corporation for meal preparation and uses volunteers to deliver meals every weekday excluding holidays. Extra meals are delivered the day before the holiday. MOW provides for subsidizing meals for recipients whose income falls at or below the 150% poverty income level. The need for subsidy has increased due to the economic situation of many Recipients and, since 2019, the cost of meal subsidies has been our largest budget expense. MOW utilizes volunteers to deliver meals to recipients and they are required to speak to them at delivery. Approximately 70 volunteers are used, delivering approximately 180 meals a day on 13 designated routes. The delivery time per route is about an hour. Our office space is donated by the Trinity Episcopal Church.
