Mission Statement

Boys Hope Girls Hope nurtures and guides motivated young people in need to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others.

About This Cause

Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) is an international organization that has worked to close the achievement gap and break the poverty cycle by acting as a bridge to opportunity since we were founded in 1977. In 15 cities, we work with 1,300 youth through their critical transitions from middle school to high school, college, and career launch. The youth we serve, who have tremendous ability, face disproportionate barriers to achieving goals and realizing their potential – family illness, trauma, neighborhood violence, or poverty. 84% of our U.S. families have household incomes of less than $50K annually (the current poverty line), and the average household, with four people, has an average yearly income of $31,700. One hundred percent of our scholars in Guatemala and Mexico come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. More than 96% of our scholars are people of color, and 67% are young women, while 80% are first-generation college students. We provide year-round, out-of-school-time programming for academic achievement, physical and mental health, college and career readiness, and leadership and service. We do this work in close partnership with public and private schools. Additionally, we provide a place of residence and care, and the basic needs of food and clothing for scholars in need of such services. To prepare our scholars for life, college, and the workforce, we provide a multi-year journey through the BHGH My Road curriculum focusing on real-life experiences. This culminates in our Collegiate Prep capstone week, which gathers rising freshmen to establish a support system among peers, prepare for the transition to college, and network with community and corporate leaders. Our goal is to ignite hope and empower our youth to develop as whole people prepared with the educational, life, social-emotional, and cultural fluency skills needed to thrive in higher education, careers, and the world that awaits them. Major Accomplishments: • Annually, over 95% of BHGH’s high school seniors go on to college, compared to 54% of low-income students nationally (Pell Institute). • Over the past decade, 90% have remained on track to earn their degrees (compared to 71.2% nationally per National Student Clearinghouse Research Center), while nearly 70% graduate within six years (compared to 11% for young people in poverty, per Pell Institute). • Thanks to growing partnerships with universities and supporters, 87% of our collegians last year were at or below $5,500 debt/year, compared to the national annual average of around $10K (calculated using Student Loan Hero’s four-year estimate of $39,400). • In 2012, the Educational Policy Institute recognized us as one of the ten most successful programs in the United States at moving young people from poverty through college.
