Mission Statement

NourishKC’s mission is to rescue fresh, local food; prepare nutritious meals; and serve as a community partner to address hunger’s core causes. Our vision is a community where all people have equal access to nutritious food.

About This Cause

Since 1988, NourishKC has improved Kansas City through a variety of programs. The agency, originally Episcopal Community Services, was formed from the ministry efforts of area Episcopal churches. Now, a fully separate, secular entity, NourishKC is committed to community-wide food access. We work to address hunger’s core causes by providing access to fresh, nutritious food and prepared meals to anyone in need using a zero-barrier access model. We recognize hunger is not only at the doorsteps of Kansas City Community Kitchen so we partner with other local nonprofits to provide fresh food to their pantries and/or prepared nutrient-dense meals to expand our reach and community member’s access to nutrient-dense foods. NourishKC utilizes staff and volunteers to prepare the meals at Kansas City Community Kitchen, serving restaurant-style fresh and nutritious meals to all ages with no questions asked. In addition to lunch meals, Kansas City Community Kitchen offer supplement meals including items like multi-grain bread, peanut butter, whole fruits, and prepared protein or snack boxes, sandwiches, and salads. These supplemental resources bridge the gap between meals and alleviate financial strain. Outside of meals served at Kansas City Community Kitchen, we prepare fresh, nutritious meals for other agencies. Using a commissary model, outside agencies can purchase affordable, nutritious food prepared at Kansas City Community Kitchen to meet the needs of their organization. The cost-effective effort results in additional meals served to Kansas City’s food insecure without duplication of services. Our Food Rescue program is the core of how we provide meals at Kansas City Community Kitchen. We rescue fresh, local, and perfectly edible food from going to waste. We pick up excess food from farms, ranches, gardens, grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, and food processors. The food rescue program operates six days a week, utilizing staff and volunteer efforts. Rescued food is used to make healthy meals at KCCK, but we rescue more delicious food than we can cook and serve. We share the bounty with our pantry partners which include nonprofits, schools, churches, and community centers. We deliver products that are often scarce for pantries in the amounts they need. We use 30% of the rescued food at KC Community Kitchen and the other 70% is redistributed to local pantry partners across the metro (Jackson, Johnson, Wyandotte, and Platte). NourishKC believes that food is a basic human right. We believe it is not enough to just fill bellies; the meals we serve must be hot, fresh, and nutritious. Our mission is to rescue fresh local food, prepare nutritious meals, and serve as a community partner to address hunger's core causes. Our vision is creating a community where all people have equal access to nutritious food.
