Mission Statement
The NCI Community Oncology Research Program – Kansas City (NCORP-KC), formerly known as the Kansas City Clinical Oncology Program (KCCOP), is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that was initially organized in 1983, in response to the National Cancer Institute's request for the formation of community-based programs committed to the implementation of cancer prevention and treatment trials. The specific goals of the NCORP-KC are: 1) To provide the community, our hospitals, and physicians access to NCI-sponsored cancer prevention and treatment protocols; 2) to increase the accrual of patients to NCI treatment protocols; 3) to increase the participation of minorities and women in cancer clinical research; and 4) to build a network of oncologists, primary care physicians, and other specialists.
About This Cause
The NCI Community Oncology Research Program – Kansas City (NCORP-KC), formerly known as the Kansas City Clinical Oncology Program (KCCOP), provides patients with access to national clinical trials and cancer care delivery research studies, while allowing patients and their families to remain in their own communities and under the care of their own physicians. NCORP-KC is a cooperative effort involving seven Kansas City area health care organizations, as well as more than 50 medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, surgeons, and other specialists. The program was initially funded by the NCI in 1983 as one of the first community oncology programs and has provided participation opportunities to over 4,200 patients and volunteers in cancer-related studies since its inception. NCORP-KC affiliates with major research centers throughout the nation to bring the benefits of cutting edge cancer research to Kansas City through participation in NCI clinical research. NCORP-KC’s goal is to identify eligible patients to participate in investigational cancer studies designed to determine ways to prevent, control, detect, diagnose and treat cancer. Cancer care delivery research within NCORP-KC focuses on outcomes research, healthcare informatics, behavioral science, rehabilitation and survivorship, palliative care, cellular therapy, and other diverse and multi-level factors that affect access to and quality of care in the community.
