ST LOUIS SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

Saint Louis, Missouri, 63103 United States

Mission Statement

The Festival fosters community and joy across the St. Louis region through the Shakespearean tradition of art for all. Our work engages deeply with our community, amplifies marginalized voices, and illuminates the common threads that tie us together

About This Cause

Founded by a Board of community leaders in 1998, the Festival produced the first free performance in Forest Park in 2001. Our year-round programs have since connected 1,000,000+ people with world-class theater. In 2020—when traditional theater was impossible—we doubled-down on producing art that inspires our community: new virtual and socially-distanced programs kept audiences safe and connected. Our immersive walking adaptation of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM was featured on the front page of the New York Times Arts section, and the Riverfront Times named it “The Best Pivot of 2020.” 2021 marked our return to the stage: KING LEAR starred Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner André De Sheilds. The New York Times said "De Shields’s towering presence is somehow more captivating in the quiet beats — perhaps most strikingly when he carries the corpse of his daughter in his arms, unwavering, halfway across the stage."
